The lesson was Lot's. He was the one negotiating with God. God let him, and Lot learned from it.

Like when a parent warns a child not to eat a spoonful of hot sauce, but they insist on doing it anyway. Sometimes, if it won't make any long term difference, the parent just say, "go ahead".

He did it on behalf of Abraham, a righteous man, who pleaded with Him. God does change His mind from time to time and He did so on several occasions recorded in the scriptures. He never goes against His character though. He cannot sin. I'm not sure of the reason He did this for Abraham. Perhaps to show disobedience to God can spread through an entire city to the point that even 10 righteous can't be found. Perhaps he gave in to Abraham's benevolent heart and honored it by giving these last few chances where Abraham had placed hope in mankind.
It's clear God and Abraham had a close relationship, and maybe God just wanted to ease Abraham's heart by giving in to his request, as one friend to another. He was willing to do what Abraham asked of Him, maybe because Abraham never asked for himself. I don't know the reason, but, I'm interested in hearing some of our Bible scholars' answers. Good question.

I think He did it for Abraham. Abraham came before Him several times petitioning. The Lord knew that there were no righteous people in Sodom and Gomorrah, but Abraham was worried that they would be wiped away from the wicked. Out of love for Abraham, he kept granting His petition. Unfortunately, the land was filled with wickedness.

God is the perfect parent. Any good parent knows that sometimes you allow the child to learn from their own experience, rather than stuff the truth down their throats. Lot needed to learn for himself that God was being perfectly just.

Contrary to politically correct views (that are stuffed down our throats), God is a gentleman and the perfect parent. When He has given every possible chance for His children to repent, He acts.

Because he wanted to give them another chance, he couldn't bear the thought of killing them all. It is clear that everyone will have a chance to make up their mind about God before they die. He was showing them mercy.

He knows what we will do-yet he tries to influence us too-those that repented left with Lot-as he says about his return

Romans 1 states the sin of sodom is unthankfulness and worshipping the created rather than the creator and then given over to a reprobate mind, that only Jesus salvation can deliver to salvation and new desires and life.

"The Lord is not slack in his promise to return, but is long suffering not willing that any should perish."

For others to believe trust in Jesus over others, over lust over money=Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor put to their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in GOD, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

I really think that he changed his mind multiple times because he knew that there wasn't one there that was a Christian and lived the laws.
