Of course you should get married for the following reasons:
In most States, even if they have "common law marriages," the laws are written to protect the legitimate children of the biological father and not the illegitimate children. Children born out of wedlock must prove to the local, State, and Federal government authorities for any and all SS, Medicare benefits, life insurances, estate assets, etc. of the father no matter who is on the birth certificate. DNA comparative proof is the only positive proof of paternity. You should have this done for the sake of the kids future health in case he dies unexpectedly. You have no legal protection if he decided to suddenly bail or find another mate. Marriage provides legal protection for you and the kids. So, don't wait for him to "pop the question." There is no question! Tomorrow, take him to the courthouse and get a marriage license and a marriage certificate. People do it all the time. The clerk can marry you two in an hour and you can dress in jeans. It's a done deal in just a few hours, and cost less than $100. Take your kids along as witnesses and have a party at home afterward. Don't take no for an answer! If he refuses, then plan to get samples of his DNA for your children and plan for your later life as a single mom.

As the others have said...no. Its just paper. 17 years is a long time, what would really change if you did get married? Also, why mess with a good thing?

marriage is not about a piece of paper its about a commitment to each other --- do you really need that paper to feel he is committed to you?? --- i knew of a couple that had lived together many years --- they got married and we split up very soon afterwards --- its all about perception ---- are you happy?? is he faithful and committed?? if so you are probably more married than most married couples --- best wishes and enjoy what you have

Marriage is overrated. Be happy to be with someone that you love for as long as you have. :)
