Churches are groups of people with a common belief or faith.
A church makes it possible for these people to gather and affirm their beliefs.
Double their joy by sharing
and
Halve their troubles by sharing
Feel the strength when feeling weak
and
Strengthening another that needs help.
This is part of the reason for "the Church".

It isn't neccessary to be close to God, or to know God, but some people like to go for social reasons, and to be part of the community. Other people sometimes get support from certain churches. Some are better than others though, can't trust someone just because they are part of a church.

Church provides it's congregation with a sense of community.
Sometimes, depending on the church, you can get a little nugget that helps you with the next week, or the crap you are going through!! :)

For these reasons
one - you must learn the word of God , can you do this on your own ? Sure , but God has ordained certain individuals ( called reverends , priests , etc . ) to teach the word of God and help with knowledge .
two - Fellowship , to be amongst people with the same belief , to pray together , friends , etc .
three - Because the bible says so ( tithing isn't forced on you , if your forced to give money , get out of the church while you can )
four - To be closer to God ( if such a thing ) It's his home too .

Where ever two or more are gathered in my name I am there with them.
People seem to have misunderstood the meaning of church. Chruch isn't just that gathering on Sunday. Whenever you are with another person sharing your faith that is Chruch. Whenever you are helping another person with the spirit of Christ in your heart, that is Church. Church is the whole of God's people.

God knows it is a pleasure for us to have a community and fellowship with others when we know Him. Church is not so much a building as it is a community.

Church moves us out of our self-centeredness and helps keep our relationship with God from focusing on ourselves and makes it other- directed. Love, you see, is not about you. It’s not about me. It’s about being in relationship with God through others. And the others are what we call church, what we call fellowship.

Get rid of the middle guy and talk to your deity directly - you save money and will be just as holy as before. Church is not necessary.
