Find a clean, reputable shop, if you don't already have a regular artist, go in and describe in as much detail as you can what you would like to get. If you find images online that you like the idea of, but don't want the exact thing (odds are someone else will already have it if it is online), print it, take it to the artist so they have a "guide" of sorts as to what you are looking to get. You're always better off with a custom tattoo than one printed from the net because the odds of someone else having the same exact tattoo is zero to none.

I love star tattoos. I got 3 purple stars tattooed on my foot and apparently that is something that a lot of people do. I found that out after I got it. So look into unique ones. I plan to go back and get more star tattoos. They're kind of addictive.

talk to the tattoo artist, get to know him/ her. Ask if they have any ideas for something original. They don't call them artists for nothing.
