They are not praying to the piece of wall, that piece of wall represents the one time temple where they were supposed to worship. God did not destroy the temple although He allowed it to happen to teach the people a lesson when they refused to listen to the warnings of the profits. I think it was the Romans that did the actuall tearing down of the temple ( after the Persians did it long ago) and burning Jerusalem and scattering the people of Israel.

I'll assume you're talking about the Western/Wailing wall.
Firstly, people don't pray TO the wall, they pray to G-d AT the wall. That's like saying people pray to a church.
Secondly, G-d didn't tear it down. As far as I know it's still standing... and as for the temple that it used to be a part of, the Roman Empire tore that down. Actually, instead of attributing the fall of the temple to G-d, Jews attribute the fact that that one wall was left standing to him. The fact that some part of the holy temple was left standing is a sign of God's unbroken promise with our people in spite of all the misfortune that has come upon us.
Lastly, as for why Jewish people pray there, it's considered the most holy place for Jews for the reasons I listed above. Also, we believe that the Divine Presence (Shekhinah) rests upon it and that the gate of heaven is situated directly above it.
You should know something about a religion before you go around making blind accusations about it.

Seek some knowledge.......
The Western Wall derives its holiness due to its proximity to the sacred Holy of Holies on the Temple Mount, which is the Most Holy Place in Judaism. This makes the Western Wall the holiest location in Judaism that is currently generally accessible to the Jewish people for prayer.
The Jews attributed it to a promise made by God that some part of the holy Temple would be left standing as a sign of God's unbroken bond with the Jewish people in spite of the catastrophes which had befallen them.

Edward, you are right, but hope springs eternal.
You would think it would be a lot easier to accept Jesus, than to pray to a stone.
