My dog had her first litter a week and a half ago. She is still eating and drinking plenty and producing plenty of milk for the 2 puppies. Although she attempts to run around with our other dog maybe once a day, she is still pretty much sleeping/sitting the rest of the day. She also feels hot when I pick her up. When I took her temp, it was 101.4, but I'm not completely sure my thermometer is correct. I assume it's normal for her to still be exhausted all day, but I just want to make sure she is ok!

I meant to add also, she hasn't had any discharge in a couple days, but she did have a slightly bloody discharge this afternoon. Is this still expected a week after having the puppies?

They can have a discharge up to 6 weeks. As long as it doesn't smell bad, it's ok. She is acting normal by wanting to be with the puppies all the time. She is their only way to stay warm--they can't regulate their own body temperature until they are 3 weeks old! Her temp at 101.4 is perfectly normal. As long as she is eating and drinking fine, I wouldn't be too worried.

For the first couple of weeks, they pretty much eat, sleep, take care of the pups. Then you will see her being more active spending more time away from the babies, etc. Sounds like everything is okay now. They always feel warmer around the belly region because the teats are full of nice warm milk. Temp is normal. I would say you have a very healthy mama dog.

She sounds like she is doing just fine. Her temp beleive it or not is normal. Dogs temps run higher then a humans. Her bloody discharge is also normal. It will probably go away in another week or so. If she starts bleeding bright red blood and/or there is more discharge then normal call the vet ASAP. But everything sounds like she is healthy.

Yes, still having a bit of discharge is normal. Her temp. is normal, she's eating and drinking, so I'd say she's fine. She's sleeping a lot because being pregnant, and now nursing, takes a lot out of a dog. Just be sure you give her just as much food as she wants right now, until she's weaned the puppies.

She is fine. Her temperature is fine. She is just so exhausted from having babies and since she is feeding them it is taking even more energy out of her. She just needs to keep hydrating herself and eating and she will be fine. If you want to, you can also give her a bit of pedialite. Pedialite hydrates children and does the same for dogs that may be tired and exhausted.

She sounds absoultly fine to me. The discarge is normal and may last for another week or 2. Just keep an eye on it and if it starts to smell really foul or horribly discolored (greenish) then its time to get her to the vets.
If all goes well then she's just fine. Good job!

What did your vet say? Both today when you took your dog in, and the day the pups were born, when you took them in for an after-birth check up?

This person is the ONLY one who can make a diagnosis. Asking a question here won't help your dog. Taking her in for professional medical attention is your answer.

That's normal for a new mommy. : )

Anything up to 102.5 is a normal temperature for a dog.
