My 10 year old brother loves getting new video games or a cool new pair of sneakers. But I guess it depends on what the kid is into. A more active kid may enjoy a new basketball or a pair of rollerblades.

You know your ten year old better, and the things that he surrounds himself with at home with you however, I am a die-heart teacher and I am always thinking of things that will encourage reading in our youth and educational growth. Consider these: a globe for his room, or a large world map book. The really big ones have all kinds of information on them that he can lie in the floor and look at. Scrabble or other word games that you and your family can play together. BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS. If he is interested in airplanes or other hobbies - get books that explain the history and growth. Select books with beautiful colored pictures. Word puzzles, and other puzzles that you can also put together as a family. Paint sets, musical instruments, creative art projects, If he is into computers, you can always get games and programs that would help him in science, math and other courses where he might have some struggles. Of course, you have to consider the fun toys - does he skate? bowl? ride bikes? It seems that most of our kids don't play outside anymore. Is he into outfits? music? CD's and DVD's are great gifts. Get him a giftcard and he can make some selections of his own choice. When you're at the dinner table, listen to him talk....he'll probably mention some things he likes or wants. Kids always tell us what they want - sometimes we don't listen....(smile)

If he has an Ipod... get him one of those gift cards for that so he can get music... he will LOVE that... Or perhaps just a walmart gift card so he can buy a new video game or something like that.. at that age it is almost better to let them pick out what they want so u will not go wrong.. that is what my husband does with his daughters.. they are 9 and 10... our 3 year old is happy with what ever at this stage so we just buy him something he needs :-)

I purchased my 10 y/o nephew a metal detector. He absolutely loves it especially now that it is summer he can take it to the beach or the park and dig up all sorts of treasures. Toy R Us sells a varitey starting at around $20.
