I recently watched the movie Jesus Camp, and I was horrified. I am not religious, but I would hope that religious people would be horrified by this as well. I feel like this kids are being brainwashed, and I would say these parents are ruining their lives. If you haven't seen it, please watch at least a bit before you answer.
You can watch the whole thing... it is 12 parts, this is the link to part 1.

I also wonder how Evangelicals felt when they found out Ted Haggard was gay. I had a little chuckle that day.

I consider myself a mainline Christian and therefore evangelical in a responsible respectful manner. I think Jesus Camp is a accurate parody of right-wing, ignorant, Christofacist, Ted Haggard, Jerry Falwell Christians.

We of the mainline traditions need to speak out about the ignorant rednecks who give mainline thinking Christians a bad name in the world.

As a Christian, the movie was terrifying. Brainwashing is a scary thing, no matter who is doing it.

However, you have your definitions of "evangelical" a little off. ALL Christians are called to be evangelical, so calling someone(or yourself) a non-evangelical Christian is pretty contradictory.

"emphasizing salvation by faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ through personal conversion, the authority of Scripture, and the importance of preaching as contrasted with ritual"

I was very traumatized by an evangelical church several years ago. I have since watched the movie "Saved!" and was badly triggered by it, even though it was a comedy, because the mind games in it hit too close to home. I think it's too soon for me to watch "Jesus Camp" but thanks for the link anyways.
I know I didn't really answer your question, but I think you have an idea of my opinion of the Evangelical movement.

I asked this question a few times, the majority of people that answered were not Christian and were also horrified. I couldn't get any answers from Evangelicals. The Christians that answered were pretty shocked or hadn't seen it.
