i mean do we really need religion in the 21st Century. Do you really believe what you read in the scriptures, quran or whichever. i mean, really. surely if religion was banned prejudice would be demolished and the world would live in harmony. well, at least more so than it currently is. surely seeing as it is the 21st century we can live with morals without religion. we all know whats right and whats wrong. what if Jesus did come back. nobody would care because nobody would recognise him. i very much doubt he would look like how he is depicted. if he really was from Jerusalem he wouldnt be pale white. god help him if he got on a plane in America. I dont mean to come across overly offensive. i just often wonder...

"Surely if religion was banned prejudice would be demolished and the world would live in harmony."

Surely, you jest.

People are people. If you ban religion, they'll fight over politics, race, territorial boundaries, or something else.

As a religious person, my religious practice harms no one. In fact, it's beneficial, because my religion teaches charity and kindness to others. Why do you care what I believe? Religious belief gives meaning and hope to untold millions of people. And generally speaking, attempts to drive religion (or anything else) underground have been profoundly unsuccessful. It may appear to work on the surface, but in reality, it's just driven underground.

yes we do, i am a muslim and i believe islam is timeless it works in any age or time. and i do believe what the scriptures say because its logical, just because you dont know what it says or have heard it from people who have their own prejudices doesnt mean that its not true. and no we would not live in harmony either way because there are people who are just bad and have their own prejudices against arab, blacks, asians, white or whatever. and another thing is that when you really think about it religion is not the cause of all violence money and power look at world war 1 or the 2nd world war it was not about religion, think about the enslavement of the blacks, or the genocide of the native americans, or the conquering of lands throughout history (this example may be tied with religion but is usually also tied with soemthing else such as POWER) and people cna debate today we are in a war with conflicts between religions! well its not just religion its power, why do you think the U.S and Russia were in constint compotition...MONEY, POWER, AND INTREST. im not saying religion has never caused grief but its def. not the primary source of evil in the world, in fact living with religion is more peaceful because you have guidlines on how to fight and when to fight, and if you look historically when the muslims were in control of the world jews, athiests, muslims, and christians all got along fine especailly in spain, and this is becasue social justice in islam teaches that all men are created equal in the eyes of god and that you treat everyone the way you want to be treated

Right. That's why the U.N has been so great at stopping genocide worldwide since it's first days. They can't even get the countries together to help eradicate malaria let alone people like Saddam Hussein. Just blame it on religion to push an anti- God and America message to the rest of the world. Religion also needs to understand that self preservation of the society at whole is more important the religious rights in today's world of terrorism. Look at how Islam terrorist have no problem with Hijab wearing woman suicidal bombers anymore.

Yeah, I often wonder, too. However, wherever a religion is banned, they go underground until the regime that banned them is over. I was brought up in a Southern Baptist Christian belief. As I went from one Christian belief to another, what stood out most was that each Christian belief talked down about the other Christian beliefs. Well, I began to realize that the writings were from people that lived in hot climates. Maybe, they were suffering from heat related ailments and thought they saw G_d. I have never seen miracles or holy beings in all my life. All I have ever experienced are emotional speaches concerning writings from the past. These speakers are a product of listening to emotional speaches concerning writings from the past. I pray that there is a benevolent god, but at this point I do not know what to belive.

How about killing off all believers that believe in killing others, that do not believe, in what they believe. That could be all of us. I don't believe in killing anyone. I guess that makes me a prime target.

The problem is that this was tried, and it failed--in the Soviet Union and it is failing in China.

How do you propose to enforce the ban?

Religion is too broad a term. I may not like the monotheistic religions, but I do like the more non-theistic religions like Buddhism and Taoism.

Religion seems to be a major constituent part of being human, at least so far. There may come a day when we can get along without it, but you or I will not see that day.

your gonna cop it for this one i reckon! Some people need something to believe in, to give them the strength to get through the day, of course they believe that stuff, I think they should ban religious advertising and TV programming and door knocking, even the discussion of it on forums such as this, i noticed in India religion defines your class and opportunities, all over the world it seems to cause problems when beliefs conflict, it would be better to let people believe what they must but disallow the expression in public places so it becomes a private thing you do in the home or At A CHURCH. And religious costume such as those skull caps Jewish people ware should also be banned because they are displaying their beliefs in public.

churches should also have to pay taxes and not be allowed to purchase material goods such as real estate and businesses.

then we would see real equality amongst the brotherhood of man

Part of me thinks that banning religion is a bad idea because I'm partial to freedom of speech and because it's hard to enforce, but it's an attractive idea.

The problem is that when religion is banned, it's usually replaced with a sort of secular religion (worship of the State), and that new religion, like most others, is spread at the point of a sword. Look at the Chinese Cultural Revolution, for example.

If there were a peaceful way to eradicate religion, I'd be all for it.

All around the world people are trying.
Deserted souls cry to be filled.
Spirits left undone their hearts are hollow.
I can see, in their eyes, hollow lives.

And every heart, and every soul
And everybody’s got a god-shaped hole.

You may have tried to fill that hole inside
With an empty hand you reached in vain.
Substitutes don’t work, bandages only hurt.
The only thing that heals is the hand of God.

Nobody’s meant to be left all alone.
Our lives are much too short
To have an empty soul.

We need something, our moral decay is in the pits prejudice would be worse. People are taught right from wrong but they believe they can do what they want as long as they are not caught. Once they are caught it is everyone else fault. "As for me and my House we will serve the Lord." Knowing that Jesus cares makes me accountable. Who are you accountable to?

I would love for religion to be banned. It would not eliminate violence and war but it would certainly help. Religion has been used as an excuse for hate, war, and discrimination for centuries and it has been the scourge of mankind. The world would be better off without it because it does more harm than good. Great suggestion!
