be able to run 3mi in under 18mins
be able to do 80 situps in under 2mins
be able to do at least 20 pull-ups (being able to do these three things will score you a 300 on the PFT)
Then get your dad to come running in at 5:30am SCREAMING at you at the top of his lungs. Have him continue to scream at you for every little thing that needs to be done during the day, all day.
Learn the history of the Marine Corps and the 11 General Orders for a Sentry.
I read this guide over just now. It's decent. If you live E of the Mississippi River, you'll go to Camp Lejune. If you live W of the Mississippi River, you'll go to MCRD San Diego and Camp Pendleton during 2nd phase.
I went to MCRD SD and never experienced sand fleas, but I heard all about them. Pendleton doesn't have sand fleas, but it does have Mount Motherf***er. And it's tough to beat the weather in San Diego, but also sucks to see Navy vessles go in and out of the ports and airplanes in and out of the civilian airport while you're stuck in what essentially feels like jail...at least for first phase anyway.

Bootcamp is 90% mental if you ask me. The prepare you for all the physical things, so that takes care of itself. Not sure how I'd advise someone to prepare for the mental aspect cause it's not like anything you could ever reproduce outside of boot.
(and get in the habit of calling them drill INSTRUCTORS now..."drill sgt" will get you bent on the quarterdeck and that sucks)

You can ask pretty much everyone that has been in the military for about 2-3 years or more, and ask them why they are so damn excited to ETS. Once you realize that it sucks balls, and instead of saying in 4 years "I sure screwed up." or "If I knew then what I know now...", then you can save yourself the disappointment and be 5 steps ahead of the game! After you have been in for 4 years and you think you are going to use your GI Bill, then you can get out and see all these dooshe bags you went to highschool with graduated from collage, with their hot wife, making 3-5 times more then you every year, living in their own house, and STD free with a good back. I say go running, do situps or whatever. good luck!

Read up on the history and the current uses of the marines. Decide what you would want to do in there that has a future once you leave.
Stay in shape and educate yourself.

Go to high school, study hard, get good grades, and apply for admission to the Naval Academy when you graduate.
Oh, and do a lot of distance running (at least 5 miles at a time) in the meantime.

Before choosing what branch you want to be in. First find out what your interests are, then choose which branch has the most opportunities for what you want. Unless you just want to be a bullet sponge, then Marines by all means.

All you have to do is stay out of trouble (don't get arrested) and finish school... It doesn't take much to become a marine. Oh and try to squeeze your head into a jar at least two times a day...
