I find him funny in an odd way. Ned Flanders is not a good example of a Christian. Ned Flanders is an example of a extremly wacky religious man. A Christian should not act like him.

I'm an atheist, and I find Flanders to be my favorite character on the show. It's hard not to root for him. Rev. Lovejoy represents the darker side of Christianity - judgemental, parochial, etc. Flanders is kind of a dork, sure, but he's good-hearted, cares about parenting and being a good neighbor (even to Homer, who doesn't quite deserve it) and is kind, generous, and sincere.

Yeah, I love Flanders. Most of my favorite humor from the Simpsons is religious in nature. My very favorite episode is the one where Homer makes a Pledge to PBS and has to leave town when they come to collect so he becomes an "Accidental" Missionary. My two favorite lines are.
"I can't be a Missionary, I don't even know who Jebus is." and
"I don't know anything about this God guy, but I think we've built a real nice cage for Him."

Ned is a strange fish. first he is a character meant to be laughed at so his most humorous ( his optimism, his naivety, his total belief that his way is the only right way < oh wait sorry that one is sadly true>) traits are exaggerated. but unfortunately there are allot of people who have Ned's worst traits, his unshakable belief that the word of the bible is literal, his belief that he can dictate public morality, his fear of practices that are different from his own. the exaggeration of the other traits is meant to point out just how silly theas bad traits are.

He used to be my favorite character, until I realized that he was too fundamentalist. Now, I'm stuck between Moe and Maggie.
