keep an eye on it and notify the game commision. here in nj they have actually been attacking people, including 2 small children. Most of the time they do run from people but for some reason they are brazen up here. too early for rabies so that is not the answer. When contacting the game warden check to see if you are allowed to kill them. some states allow all year round killing due to high populations of the animal, and protection of farmers/ranchers animals

Shoot It
Coyote's are meat eaters, they are not vegetarians. They eat deer fawns! They eat any baby animals & any other animal they can catch & over power including family pets or even a young child. They contract Rabies & loose all fear of humans causing them to be even more dangerous.
We are starting to get allot of them around here. Over in Asheville, a good size city, a family I know were sitting on the back porch cooking out hamburgers. They saw 3 coyote's standing 200 yards away on a hill. They had thier small mixed breed cute fuzzy, 6 yr old dog tied out on a cable run about 50 yards from the porch. As they were saying hey look at those coyotes, one of the Coyotes ran down the hill & snached the dog off the cable before they could get half way to it. 5 people yelling & two running toward it did no good.

There's a small pack of coyotes that hang out at a ranch where I shoot prairie dogs. They seem to know when I'm there to shoot. I'll show up, set up my shooting table and cooler, and my rifles. They'll show up on a small hill overlooking me and the Prairie Dogs. They will stay there until I'm done shooting and then go down for dinner. Seems to work out pretty good, they clean up the mess and don't bother the rancher's livestock. If the pack gets too large, I'll probably have to thin it out some. Seems to be holding steady at about 8 to 10 Coyotes.

I have seen hundreds, maybe a thousand or more coyotes. None have ever threatened me in the least. On the mountainside, where I grew up, they would get your pets, if you weren't careful. But hey, we lived on their land! I have heard scary stories about coyotes, and I believe that most are lies. After years of backpacking, mostly by myself, I have not had a single bad episode with coyotes, NOT ONE! There is no reason to kill them, they are no threat.
I live in the city now (I can't wait to get out), and it is far more dangerous here, than it was in the back-country. I have an average of about one encounter a month, with someone (whoever it happens to be 'that' night) who should be in prison.

Depending on where I am, I'll shoot it, if it's legal, and I have a safe shot. But, that's just me. We have way too many coyotes in my area, killing the chickens, and even coming up into the yard.
I assume, based on your question, that you are just worried about your safety while hiking. Coyotes are cowards. Generally, they will leave you alone, but you do have to be careful. If they have never been hunted, they don't know to fear humans, and WILL attack children and small animals. If you see one, and he ain't trying to get away from you, holler at him. If that doesn't work, throw rocks.

If I am predator hunting and see one I look behind it to see if there are more so I can shoot them all.
If I just see one I remember the area and try and gain acess to the land to hunt it and predator hunt using various calls and decoys . Coyotes (in the East)are wary smart animals and are not easily killed.
Where I hunted in NC we are over run with them there is a year round season and no restrictions on how many you can kill

The coyotes here in North Carolina are killing the fox population . I don't have a problem with that in itself , because foxes are the main carrier of rabies here . The problem is that now we are being overrun with rabbits . What will be next ? I haven't heard of any attacks on humans yet , but it may be only a matter of time .

Depends, as Ol Fuz if the pack gets too large it may need culling, but they do keep the rabbit and prairies dogs in check somewhat.. Wolves are a different matter, my sister live in Ol' Fuz's neck of the woods and Wolves are packing up in the Shoshone NF, killing calves in the spring on the pitchfork and neighboring ranches. I think it won't belong until the Wyoming DNR has open season on wolves again..

I saw coyotes many times. They alway are very shy and run away all time. My dog alway chase coyotes all time, but be careful that coyotes alway eat cats, rabbits, and sometimes small dogs. Sometimes I fed coyottes they never bite me because they are very shy and intelligence. They know me well, but do not touch or pet any coyote because coyotes have disease likes cats, rats, and birds.
