I'm leaving for basic training, army national guard, in August. I'm going to be shipped to Fort Jackson, NC. I just wanted to know what would be the best way to physically prepare for my training.

Running, push-ups, sit-ups. Repeat.

Do alot of push-up, sit ups, and run run run. Go to a playground and do the horizontal ladder. Start waking up at around 4:00 am for your exercises and do push-ups and sit-ups throughout the day. Buy a book on basic training, there some out there. Be prepared to get dogged out both mentally and physically. Learn the phonic alphabet, basic first aid. Get in the mind set of "Mind over matter, it's my mind and you don't matter". Good luck. I was in the military for 20 years and retired in 1996. I was also a Drill Sergeant for two years. All in the MIND.

Eat a lot of raw meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Ask every one you meet to punch you as hard as they can for the next three months! Learn to march until you drop and then crawl the rest of the way! Make sure you kiss every DI's butt from the moment you land at Paris Island until you graduate from boot! Learn to acquire the taste for licking the inside of a urinal! Animayhem thinks running two miles a day will be enough. I used to run 5 miles before gym class in HS each day. In my boot camp you never were seen walking anywhere at any time. You even continued running in place. I still have the scars and the bent dog tags from the abuse I received in boot! I am lucky I am still alive. Every DI should be raised up by attaching fishhooks through out their entire body and then when they're about to die you pour gasoline over their heads and light them up! It would be the right thing to do to some these beasts!

running does alotta good but its not everything. ya need to work chest, tris, and abs as well. for chest an tris do pushups and dips. pushups suck but when ya can do alot theyre not so bad. do as many as you can in 2 minutes then decrease 15 seconds each set resting only 10-20 seconds between each set. it works trust me. abs is just doin situps ya can do the same thing. mix running with hiking since road marches are part of basic. put some books water or sandbags in a bookbag on walk a mile or two. increase half mile every 2 rucks. the new basic training pt isnt anything like the active duty pt. only the apft. so when your done with basic / ait dump it.

Run. Run until you puke, then run some more. You should be running at least 2 miles per day and you should get to the point where you complete the run in 18 minutes or less.

Pushups, situps, chinups as well. Do at least 60 pushups, 80 situps, and 10 chinups each day and you should get to the point where you can do one repetition of an exercise in 2 minutes or less.

If you are not already in good physical shape, start now, but start slow. You can build up to very good shape, excellent physical shape, but you must avoid injuring yourself early on. If you do not have good lung capacity, work on getting that. Put on a pack with about 10 lbs in it and go for a short hike, but build up from there. Add small amounts of weight and distance. You might want to take up running if you don't already. Get good quality running shoes and don't run down hill or run on concrete!!! Build up the number of push ups and chin ups and sit ups you can do, but again--start very easy and build up slowly and gradually. Your body can adjust to huge amounts of work but adjust slowly. If you smoke, quit. Try to not drink, either.

Just run.

Run a lot.

Then run some more.

By the end of that, BCT in Fort Jackson will be easy.

Run, walk, swim, push ups, sit ups, light weights....eat carbs but the right ones. I survived boot camp on lots of peanut butter and wheat bread and I made it just fine.

Sleep to your hearts content, eat all of the good food you want, enjoy your privacy and peace of mind.

Really, physical and mental conditioning.
