They use the petals as a way to attract birds and other things to them. Since the flowers can not mate themselves, they use bees and other flying creatures to transfer the pollen to alother flower. The bright colors from the petals attract these animals.

Petals are extremely important for the plants reproduction. The petals do attract many kinds of pollinators like birds, bees, butterflies, and so on. The petals are located all around the stigma of the flower.
The stigma has a sugary, sticky end that holds on to pollen. The pollen then sends down pollen tubes down to the style (part of the female parts of the flower together called the pistil) to the ovaries. The pollen releases the sperm to the ovaries and a fruit then develops.
Think of an apple tree. In the spring, it has beautiful pink petals. The bees help carry the pollen that will fertilize the eggs in the ovaries. The egg and sperm then grow into an apple which has seeds inside. A bird, deer or other animal eats the apple when it falls to the ground. The seeds pass through the animal and then land on the ground. The seeds germinate and an apple tree begins to grow.
Just remember, when you eat fruit, you are eating a plant ovary! If you eat eggs, that last statement shouldn't gross you out that bad. I don't eat eggs, they do gross me out.

One has to ask, "What possible benefit could this have
to the plant?". After all, flowers represent a substantial
investment in energy and materials for the plant. The plant
creates the flower in order to reproduce, but needs to attract
insects to perform the actual pollination. The petals are a
visual signpost directing insects (bees for example) to the flower.
You should be able to find some pictures of flowers
filtered to show how they would appear to bees.
