This is a university and not a normal school. In primary school or first grade the education might be free or cheap. The teachers here might be untrained graduates, trained graduated or not a gradate at all. They might just be a Teaching Assistant. As you go up it tends to be a bit more expensive because the teachers might be more trained with a degree. In university there are lecturers who have Masters or Doctorate degrees. They have to be paid and you can't pay a doctor chicken feed, they have to be paid for their degree. They would have spent about 3-4 years for a Bachelors degree, 1 or 2 doing a Masters and maybe 1 or 2 more to get a Doctorate. If it is medicine it is probable 10 or so years.

Also, for the lectures to teach in a comfortable environment they have to have the best. There is a cost attached to all these. Some of these are also non-nationals and need to pay for their accommodation.

To get a degree from these universities can go a long way in terms of finding a job. You would be more recognized.

These are some of the reasons why major universities are so expensive.

Because it is worth it.

Seriously, can you imagine how much it costs to run a university? The salaries for everyone, the maintenance on the buildings, the utilities? It's a good thing most of the majors get some funding from the state or it would be more.

Even as expensive as it is, most people have their student loans paid back within 5-10 years because the average college grad makes a LOT more money than a non-college grad.
