The definition of Christian is one who believes in Christ.

Anything beyond that is a subjective assessment by individuals of different beliefs and each one will have a different answer based on their our beliefs, teachings and dogma.

The only definition of a "true" Christian is a believer in Christ.

This is the rub, is it not? In order for a non-Christian to know whether or not someone is a Christian, he or she needs to do what most non-Christians FORBID Christians to do:

Pass judgment on their works! "By their fruits you shall know them; a bad tree does not bring forth good fruit; neither does a good tree bring bad fruit." In other words, does their life produce goodness, kindness, mercy, love, etc? Or is it characterized by meanness, selfishness, bitterness, etc?
EDIT:
This is, admittedly, a surface treatment! No one is a real Christian who does not believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, nor is one a real Christian who lives as a sinner. Slipping into occasional sin is one thing, living it is another. This is where it gets squishy and ultimate judgment is left to God.

Why do so many people think that Christians are not allowed to judge, by the way? Jesus never taught do not judge at all, but rather use correct, right, even-handed judgment - the kind of judgment you expect from God for you. If you want to be judged fairly, judge fairly.

granted i believe there is a difference between Christians and people calling themselves christians. But you can't expect Christians to be perfect 100% of the time. Sometimes that the problem with society is that when somebody proclaims to be a Christian and they mess up that person gets attacked because they are a "Christian". Nobody is perfect. Christians will always mess up and the only thing they can do is ask God for forgiveness and anybody else neccessary, move on and hope to not make the same mistake again.

I think there is a differences in a christian and one that pretends to be. By the way they try to live there lives. Either way you look at it though, Christians mess up too. How they treat people. If they judge all the time I would wonder about them. If they treat everyone with love and always shows it then there a good chance of it. Either way it's not up to us to chose who is and who isn't. For the Lord is the only one that truly knows the heart of all.

Following his teachings is the best way to show your love for him. Don't be a hypocrite and say you believe and then do any dam thing you want. Believing means following. He is Guru so follow his instructions. The problem most people don't know what he said due to king Constantine changing so many things in the bible. He added Paul's teachings who never even met Jesus and he took out everything to do with Vegetarianism, reincarnation, Karma, and he made hell a place where souls go eternally. For the original teachings of Jesus before Constantine changed them google gospelofthenazirenes.com Following Jesuses teachings will set you free. And his name is Yesuah not Jesus that is a translation mistake. How can one change someones name in translation. We have to question what else did they change. And why so many denominations? Because they don't know what he actually said.

The only requirement to be a Christian is the belief that Jesus of Nazareth was (is) the Christ and therefor the Son of God. What constitutes a *real* of *good* Christian is a different story. It is endlessly debated and will never be answered.

Actually you sort of answered the question yourself. You can tell the difference in the deeds, actions, forgiveness and love a person shows for others. As for the sacrifices Christians are willing to make, it is according to how much faith and how much love they have for God that will determine their willingness to sacrifice anything. But a person who truly loves and believe's in God will sacrifice what God asks of them. Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice when He laid down His life for ours

There really is no need to differentiate who is a "real Christian" and who is not. If people would just stop making judgements about other people, and just read the doctrine, none of this arguing would be necessary.

"How can I be more true to the teachings of Jesus Christ?" is the question that I would be asking myself.

I always find it so funny when I hear "real christian". I my book anyone who calls themselves a Christian is a Christian.

It seems to be a way to deny the actions of some Christians. Oh he wasn't a real christian, and that somehow makes it OK.

Jesus said that you could recognize a Christian by the fruit that they bear. Love, Joy, peace, Paitience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self control.
