there are medications the vet can prescribe that could help. Dogs can suffer from chemical imbalance like people can.

When she's afraid, do you tell her everything's okay? Do you do it in the same tone of voice that you praise her with? Dogs don't understand the difference. I try to comfort my dogs by saying "it's okay" rather firmly, more like a command. When she acts braver - even a little bit - tell her she's a good girl. Take her on many walks to new places so she's exposed to lots of different things, people, and animals. Be patient - she may still be scared of some things, but she'll get better.
Good luck!!

Your dog is and was not socialized. Best thing now is to enroll in a good obedience class. This will teach you about dog behavior and how to teach your dog. It will also help socialize your dog and give it confidence. Please do this for the dog. The suggestion to tell your dog "OK" whenever it gets frightened is wrong. What you are doing is teaching the dog that it is OK to be frightened. Also never pick up a dog that is showing fear as picking a dog up is a reward, you just taught the dog that when it is frightened it gets a reward. If you learn about dog behavior from a good obedience class this will be the best thing for your dog.

Okay, First of all if she is new then she just may not be used to her surroundings yet. To help her, invite other dogs over. Show her it's okay to interact with other beings. Let other people hold her and play with her! She will be terrified at first so only try this like 3 times a month. It should work though!

Coley is doing a good thing, we have all heard the phrase her bark is bigger than her bite. She is probably trying to protect you without really being trained how. Labs do not mature until they are 3 years old so be patient.

okay heres what you need to do....
sit her on your lap or near you
get something shes afraid of
and show it to her
if shes frieghtened drop it behind you and pet her and tell he "its okay coley! its okay" in a nice soft voice
then do it again
finally make her touch it and each time confort her
you can also do this at random moments when shes scared
make sure you have hold of her so she doesnt run away from it
glad i could help

When there's something she is scared of, take her leash and make her sit right in front of you.
No "Aww it is OK, not one word, just calmly put her in front of you, and ONLY when she sits down, then pet her, no big fuss.
Don't encourage her being scared.Encourage her being calm.
