Our goverment is cocky. We as people are just as cocky. The problem is the system we have currently was built to protect other people from people making unitelligent choices. But people are smarter on average than they used to be. The only way to fix the current system is to overthrow the current goverment and replace it with one that give more power to people who specialize in a single isssue so we have scientist making decions about global warming and we have accountants fixing the social security mess. We need a new system. We need to Deconstruct and start over. soon or we will all be screwed. Further, the problem is worse now than it has ever been before. We were attacked sure, but look at our history, everytime we get attacked or everytime we want something or don't like something there is a supposed attack or every now and then a real one, we go in and cause more death while preaching freedom and then we take it away or restrict it at home, we are a selfish form of paricite and need to change. We have gone around giving country after country a reason to hate us, no duh we were attacked, i'm up for completly reforming the system. There are always problems sure but we kept creating more and now we're kind of drowing ourselfs. Reform!

If you look at history, you'll see that there's never been a time without troubles. The difference has been how people have risen to the challenge.
In the 20th Century, America was attacked on it's own soil, and over 2000 of it's citizens killed. The result was an all-out war effort that completely defeated that enemy, and it's allies.
In the 21st Century, America was attacked on it's own soil, and nearly 3000 of it's citizens killed. The result was a half-assed, undeclared 'War on Terror' that promises to drag on indefinitely with no prospect whatsoever of victory.
Now, you can say that it's a different kind of war, a different kind of enemy - and it is, but that's not the important difference.

I have the simplest solution and if implemented it would change the country dramatically for the better.
retroactive term limits on congress, if you have already served 12 years, next election you are gone.
second to that would be for the voters to once again do their job and rid this country of careerists in congress who are killing our country and our freedoms for their benefit.
but that would mean you are going to have to vote for someone other than the same old hack you have been voting for your entire life.
Start with just these, vote against them regardless of party in the next election they come up for.

We are zeroed in on the small stuff and not paying attention to the big problems. It's this person's problems, or that person's problems, not our huge, shared problems. Too much drama, not enough action.
First of all, get the crap out of the media. By that, I mean Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, Rosie O'Donnell, or whoever else is the useless flavor of the day. (You can do that by tuning off and not buying). We have some serious issues facing us which are not going away, and the media should be educating us to the nuances of the problems, not playing tug-o-war with us. When Americans allow themselves to be side-tracked by the clutter and meaningless that is on television, they are unable to focus. Lack of focus triggers anger and frustration - ask anyone who battles serious ADHD.
Second of all, it's OK to disagree. But we have to keep reminding ourselves to be respectful and civil to one another. When we find ourselves in disagreement, we have to NEGOTIATE. It is the negotiating skill that is absent in our society. How many kids today learn to debate in school? See? We don't even think in terms of debate, we think in terms of sports - we want to win, we want a smackdown. It is this spirit of "winning" that causes parties to be less than open and honest, and politicians to be mendatious. (good word, huh.)
We all feel frightened because we feel helpless. We have given all the power to the government, and the government is obviously not protecting us. Everytime a problem arises, another law goes on the books, but no one puts the words into action. Legislation is useless, we need to enforce. We need to become very very involved -- your senator and congressman should begin to recognize your name because you fax or email or call them once a week, or more.
I'd like to see us, all together, push the media for reminders of what America is all about. I'd like to hear "We the People" type public discussions on the concepts of our forefathers and how they may or may not apply to today's problems. I'd like to see a rebirth of patriotism - not the 4th of July kind, but something deeper and more grassroots where we learn all over again to treasure this land that is ours and the responsibility we have to contribute to our country via good behavior.
I'd like to see a social stress for good behavior, mutual respect, courtesy, and old fashioned good deeds. Maybe when we all get back on the same page, we can put our "dukes" down and communicate a little.
I like forums like this, when they are used appropriately, because it gives like minds a way to communicate and share ideas. This is good.

Patriotism. I am a democrat, second, an American citizen, first.
I am not seditious. I do not call my representatives (whether I personally voted for them or not) names, nor spread unfounded rumours about them, nor treat them as "guilty until proved innocent".
Some do. Some did with Former President Clinton.
It was contemptible then, it's contemptible now.
Speak up when you see it, and unite democrats and republicans against it.
Oh, I'm a democrat. Not a liberal. Not a socialists.
Your post is very "Chicken Little" in it's flavor. You may wish to be more specific and less alarmist (more facts, less angst).

confident, I even have! no longer in ordinary terms do I stay in ordinary terms a quick sail from Canada, I even have some Canadian pals that consistently urge me to circulate the border, yet... properly, i'm a Detroit grrrl, and the only plans I could desire to circulate to Canada appropriate now are contained in the form of a nuclear attack or some such BS and then I head for the Hudson Bay. by Canada, and up. way up. rattling, my passport isn't up as much as now however!

There is a lot in your question to take in, yet, I think, if you step back and just focus on what the main thing is for you, then maybe things wouldn't be so overwhelming. I think the only thing that bush did, that was of any good, was bring about a realization of how messed up things really are in government, and how many people are tired of that, and want something better. Maybe your question is more about not knowing how to make it better.
As an aside, I would like to add that I am proud to be an American, and I wouldn't and couldn't imagine living anywhere else . I believe we are blessed to be in a country where we can express our views that are contrary to convention. The only thing is that, for too long, the people in power have chosen the best interests for them, and left US out of the decision, and we have idly sat by and taken it. Before I continue, I just want to say upfront that I didn't for bush. I didn't trust him then, and I still don't. Yet, Now is the time for those, who want something better to stand up and be heard.
There are those in America whose beliefs fall in-line to governmental decisions and those choices are theirs to have because this is America. Yet, for those who don't like what is going on; who don't like how this country is being run, and who don't like the BS being handed down, then its time to do something about it. If this country means as much to you as people say that she does, then don't you think she's worth taking the time to voice those opinions to those in power? I personally do. I know that there are people who do indeed take advantage of this, but maybe there should be more.
I don't want to hear how its impossible for change to happen because a long time ago, during the reign of King George, colonists took it upon themselves to make themselves heard because the government wasn't listening to what they had to say(sound familiar?).
I am not talking about going to war with the government, but I am talking about standing up and voice your feelings through
letters to the editor; by finding out as much as you can about what is really going on. Knowledge is power and we, the people, have gone without it for too long. Its time to take it back. Challenge everything that is said. Take time to go to a town meeting if the candidates come to your town. Ask questions, and if you do, make sure your question is answered. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue, but an American issue.
Politicians claim if you take the soldiers out of Iraq, then it makes America more vulnerable to attack. Well, that claim doesn't hold water because before the war in Iraq, it seems to me America has always been vulnerable to attack. Case in point, Pearl Harbor, The first WTC bombing, and then 9/11. If terrorists could attack the United States while we were not at war, what makes people think that they couldn't or wouldn't attack while we were?
