Well, atheists are certainly less likely to hold some of Christianity's more problematic moral stances.
For instance, much of the AIDS problem in Africa is the direct result of Christian teaching about contraception (ditto the Catholic Church's efforts to stifle safe sex education there).
Christianity has supported or still supports various kinds of sexism, racism, and hate for those who are different.

Easy...
Atheists are pragmatic people by nature, concerned with worldly, practical matters. They are generally hedonistic.
Atheists know that crime is an unrewarding profession. You can make some $, but if you have to get prison raped for a few years later, it's not worth the cost. They know all of society is oriented against crime so it makes it hard to get away with things.
Atheists are more likely to find a good job, like being a lawyer or whatever, to make money in such a way that no one is going to come after them to ruin their lives when they're trying to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Au contraire! Japan is NOT an unreligious country. Their beliefs have simply been integrated as part of their lives, just like brushing your teeth. Their spirituality and beliefs (which are predominantly Buddhism and Shinto) are not hammered into their heads like Christianity is in the USA.
Now what do YOU make of the fact that only 9% of people have an IQ more than 120? Hmm, perhaps it is the intelligent ones that stay out of prison, are never incarcerated, earn more money, rarely divorce, and can see through the illogic that surrounds religion?

If those numbers are indeed accurate, there could be many things behind them. Maybe there are churches out there that are exhorting their members to commit crimes punishable by prison? :-)
Maybe many atheists actually have a strong, mature moral compass, with no need of supernatural rewards and punishments.
(You don't hear about atheists murdering abortion providers because killing is immoral.)
Speaking for myself, I have (1) some degree of empathy for my fellow human beings, and (2) the realization that some 30,000 days, more or less, are all any of us gets. This life is all we have. It counts. We're all in it together. What sort of world do we want to help create?

Pragmatism. The sad truth is, no matter what you actually believe, "Finding Jesusâ¢" is the easiest and surest way to be approved for parole.
Whether it is an atheist pretending, or a hardcore drug lord mass murderer makes no difference that so long as parole boards see this as positive, it will continue to be skewed.

Many people seek out religion while incarcerated to find a fresh start. I think a better study would be to poll current inmates on what their religious beliefs were at the time they committed their crimes.
Not that I'm saying atheism is related to crime. I'm not. I'm just saying that for the above reason, the statistics aren't really indicative of anything.

maybe it has to do with education. I know that in the country I am from, most criminals are the ones with lack of education and people who are not very well-off. Generally, the atheists I have met are well educated. who knows

Atheists tend to have higher levels of education and income.
that alone could be the main reason for a lack of atheists in Jail.
