Probably basic hunter/gathering inner dialogue:
ignore the english but...
1. I need food
2. I need to kill to survive.
3. I need to mate.
There is a theory that while the early modern humans were expanding the world they encountered hallucinogenic mushrooms which developed an even more sense of introspection, which echoed into todays society as religion.language and culture.

Who says cavemen only had rudimentary language skills?
Why couldn't men have survived in caves after the last nuclear holocaust?
I think civilization has advanced (and been destroyed by idiotic humans) several times.
Make sure you know where a good cave is, so that when the next one comes, you can hide there and have inner dialogues.

Well, cavemen are humans too so like all of us they do have emotions, feelings and thoughts. And I believe most of our inner dialogues are consist of that and since these things don't really require that much of a language skill so they must be doing fine I guess...

Maybe they spent a lot of time thinking about how amazing the world was in which they lived. Perhaps they did a lot of thinking about the God who made it all, too.
