From the very GENESIS!!!

Why is it that Christian Sects promote the Shut-up-and-listen mentality?

Why does God ask you to have FAITH instead of QUESTIONING him/her/it????

Is that what you got from Mom and Dad? And did you like it???

Religion breeds ignorance

No you're basing this question on an assumption. Many and I repeat MANY Christians with Christian parents have delved into all kinda different theologies and explored various other spiritual belief systems.
Most often if you're raised in a Christian home, you hit a certain age, and rebel (like every other teen) at which point you may question your parents belief, and determine you either accept it OR you want to look into other ideas. EVERY Christian I know.. has done this. SO.... while our belief requires faith, don't be deceived for 1 second that we haven't looked into other beliefs because we QUESTIONED ours. We are JUST LIKE YOU, as far as wanting knowledge, no different. What we have that is different is perhaps a mind open enough to accept the fact that our universe isn't confined to the tangible, and we recognize the spiritual, have experienced the spiritual, therefore are QUALIFIED, with the knowledge to speak on it.
Be blessed!

Not all Christians encourage ignorance. For thinking Christians, I recommend the following books:

Keith Ward, What the Bible Really Teaches
Kenneth Miller, Finding Darwin's God

Both are good examples of much more mainstream (speaking both historically and in our own time) forms of the Christian faith, and its pursuit of understanding from the sciences as well as its openness to critical study of the Bible.

A God that suspiciously feels like the (human) dictator of a collection. @ omit, and what Bible is that? Any of those with the Genesis creation tale needless to say state that gaining awareness replaced into what Adam & Eve (and consequently all human beings) have been punished for. @ cowboy, first, it replaced right into a serpent. 2d, who ALL-KNOWINGLY created him? 3. Gos says easily you will die. that ought to easily be construed as a lie. @ joe, scientific awareness replaced into made via scientists who had to assert they have been of regardless of faith or be killed. no longer very stable. besides, the Christians of the pas weren't in basic terms like the Christians of at present. same with Jews and all the different religions.. @ planner, yet another biblical contradiction.

Dear doomsday,

Christianity does not discourage the pursuit of knowledge. God himself says that he is to be sought after. To seek after God involves learning and (learning involves questioning). To have faith is not merely blind, the Psalms in fact record reflections of those who had questions for God.

That being said it should also be noted that the Bible does not answer every question that we might have for God. The Bible reveals to us who God is and His heart to make Himself known to man.

For myself personally i did not receive the Lord until i was 18 years old and was not brought up going to church. I've meet actually a lot of Christians who did not grow up going to church.

That being said- i know a lot of my Sunday school kids over the years grew up going to church but ultimately some fell away while others learned, grew, and have a personal faith in God.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

I'm in the wrong sect obviously. If only everyone would just shut up and listen.

God wants us to seek out answers. You have a misconception of what God says. Obviously your one of those smart atheist who have done a comparative study of all the religions and know your bible better than us poor misguided Christians.

Guess what. Mom and dad were right most of the time. I only figured that out when I became a dad.

I ask questions all the time and I am a Christian. How else do you learn if you don't ask.I will admit that a lot of the preachers around cant or wont answer the questions but I know how to read and do research so I don't need them anyhow.

God doesn't want us to shut up and listen. He wants us to think that is why he gave us a brain as a gift to use. It is a sin not use the gifts God gave you. However some of ALL ilk find not thinking for themselves easier and more comfortable

This extreme generalization shows lack of ability to think for yourself on your part and believing stereotypes that people have put out.

BTW Genesis is about disobedience.

because the pursuit of knowledge only reveals how false, incomplete, flawful the bible is...christians were much happier without knowing about dinosaurs , now they have another problem to deal with: how do they explain dinosaurs?? but anyway they always find an explanation even though it is absurd...and they need people to remain ignorant (on the verge of autism) not to question it.
