G'day,

I'm living in Melbourne and this is what you're going to find in Melbourne:
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the second weblink from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day in summer, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students. There are also alot of British and American migrants here and they got along nicely.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au). Good for students, since not all can afford car.
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the third article on the bottom.
7. Night Life... hmmmm... I'll say the centre of nite activities will be Crown Casino and Docklands. Altho there are still plenty of cafe's and clubs scattered around the suburbs as well. However of course this is nothing compared to NYC, the city that never sleeps. Some migrants do complaint a little abt how quiet Melbourne is. Not me though ;)
8. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.

Hope this helps. Please though... never suggest that you are better than the other b'cos of where you come from... then you'll be alright :) Yes, there will be some time needed for adjustments, but there will be helps and supports along the way since Australia is built by immigrants (yes, this include the Anglo-Saxons and the Aborigins, so I was told).

If you are moving to Australia for the heat then Melbourne may not be the place for you. It is not warm all year round down there....not like up the top of the country...Queensland, Northern Territory or northern Western Australia.
However Australia is a nice place to live. Aussies are pretty easy going and we have plenty of foreign students everywhere so you won't stick out like a sore thumb...you could just be the toast of the town...with your accent etc . Don't stress and just be yourself....you'll be fine.

Melbourne is a great city ive lived here all my life and its a fun place to live, its a multi-cultural state so dont think you will stand out, we do have a great night life here and shopping is great, you will have fun. It might take you a bit to get used to the weather but its worth it.
Australia is a great country and you will feel like a aussie in no time.

Well, the general pace of life is quite slow and peaceful, so it's a great place, though it can get a lil lonely at times. That's when you have to find your own source of entertainment (many to choose from!) and friends. The transport system is pretty good with trains, trams and buses serving the suburbs, so it won't be a hassle to travel around. Culture and religion wise, it's a melting pot of difference races, so do expect to mix around with Asians, Hispanics, Italians, Greeks... etc just to name a few. Don't worry about sticking out like a sore thumb - just be yourself and enjoy the life there, though I wouldn't say being a stare magnet isn't 'nice' - it'll be great if it's someone hot/cool staring! :)

Melbourne is not warm - go north to Queensland or west to Perth. There are good universities there too. you will be very homesick initially. I hope you know someone here to help you over the bumps - everyone needs "support network" - if not join the American friendship group or other club where you will be with other americans initially.
australians will love your accent but will not like any comparisons where you begin with "back home we...."
australia is very modern - just like the u.s.a. - but the cities are smaller than nyc

many times, to be allowed to stay on my own in Australia (without parental/guardians) here, you like permission from the courts, while you're decrease than 18. even although, while you're 18 or older, you may flow here to paintings and stay to tell the story a Visa, and prepare for Australian citizenship in 2 or 3 years, in case you wanted to stay completely. you may desire to organise different issues until now only arriving here, which comprise a stable job and place to stay, or you may desire to be look by skill of the government as taking great component on the subject of the welfare equipment, which you would be despatched domicile for (after months in an immigration camp in Villawood)

Why would you stick out? Australians are pretty easy going. Just try not to assume that you, and your ways, are automatically superior to those of Australians. In other words, not too much "Back home we...".
