I'm currently job searching for a graphic design position. I wonder if my having a nose piercing would deter a potential employer from hiring me. Consider the grounds, business dress atmosphere, professional looking female with the skills and everything you're looking for in the specific position. Would a nose stud change your mind? Please explain your answer, if it's yes or no.

As a small business owner I would not mind unless you would be in front of numerous clients every day and representing the face of the company. If it is a very small one, I would be open to you leaving it in. If you are meeting several customers a day, can you take it out during work hours?

It's a simple matter of distraction. If you have great skills, a great attitude and are a great fit for the job/company, then it should not matter whether you have tattoos, piercings or pink hair. But remember, the general public may not be as accepting as we would like them to be. I'm afraid most in the business world are buttoned up and don't handle little issues like this well.

If it's really an issue for you, a statement of yours, keep it in and keep applying until your find a great new job where they don't care one bit.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Graphic design is a very open field- just make sure it's a nose stud and nothing too big or crazy. In this day and age most people don't care. I have my nose pierced and work for a very conservative company in a high ranking position. It's the job skills that matter. And it does help that you are in a very creative field with more creative friendly people. But if you are worried about it and think it might make you self-conscious just take it out for interviews. You don't want anything to take away from your ability to be a good open interview because THAT is what management hires on.

You must admit that the professional world has changed in the past ten years. Now you might find someone with a tatoo sticking out past their sleve, or a piercing in their nose, but these things are not a representation to the ability of a person to do their work. I myself own my own business, and work in a professional environment every day, but have numerous tatoos. I keep them covered during the business day, so I do not feel they detract from the look of my attire. However, I do think that even though the business world may be evolving, a professional look and attire are important. With all that said, I would probably look past the nose ring in the hiring process, but if I found it to detract from your appearance, I would definately ask that you remove it for the purpose of work. Small studs are sometimes difficult to see, and I would take that into consideration.

I'm not a business owner, but I too had a nasal piercing and even though you would think that it isn't THAT big of a deal - most employers look down on it. It depends on where you live, and also the culture there. Some people just plain don't like them, however. I ran into a lot of problems with employers and ended up going ahead and taking mine out because it wasn't worth the hassle. However, I too am in Graphic design and someday I'll put it right back!

I would say yes if I were an employer, but I am pretty open about things. I would suggest wearing the tiniest stud possible so it is unobtrusive in your interview. If you were to look completely professional and have the skills to back it up, then I would think a lot of employers in graphic design would be more open to alternative viewpoints/personalities. I would not wear a hoop to any interviews. ETA - I live in Los Angeles, where these things are more of a norm.

It probably would not deter me with "back office" work, but I would never put someone with a nose piercing in view of clients (unless it is a business that may not think it is a big deal). However, my first impression may be that they are a deviant kid and will be a difficult employee. If 2 equally qualified people applied, I would hire the one without the nose piercing.

I think it depends. Graphic design is a rather creative field, so I think you get a little leeway with appearance, especially vs a very conserative field like law for banking. I personally wouldn't be deterred by someone with a SMALL nose stud, as opposed to someone with a bright green mohawk.
