You will lose them if you choose to do a fresh install instead of an upgrade. But before you do you need to make sure that your computer will run Vista, you can do this by going to the following address http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/default.mspx and running the "Run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor" .

Whether you can actually perform an in-place upgrade depends on which version of Windows you already have and which Vista you plan to get. You can only perform an in-place upgrade from certain Windows XP versions to certain Windows Vista versions; you can't upgrade any of the pre-Vista Windows operating systems (including Windows 9x/Me and Windows 2000) to Vista without performing a clean installation.
There is a table at http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2082982,00.asp
which shows which versions of Windows XP are capable of in-place upgrades to which versions of Windows Vista:

Good Luck

Ideally, you should not lose any files or programs. The bigger question is whether the current programs you are running are compatible with Vista. Chances are they are not, which means as soon as you load Vista, you are dead in the water as far as your XP compatible programs, including printers and other peripherals.

Which Vista are you upgrading to? Unless you have a max upgraded video card and 2 gb of RAM, you will be going backwards.

I don't have Vista for the very reason that all reviews I've read, including PC Mag, don't give it very high marks at all. After all the boys in Redmond are capable of, we get basically nothing and they call it improvement.

Upgrade at your own risk.

Windows Vista will upgrade but there have been problems reported. Usually it transfers most files OK. Device drivers for hardware is a lot more iffy. The best bet is to back up and be ready to reinstall XP if it doesn't work for you. Sometimes you can find device drivers for printers and othe add ons. No guarantee.

No, as long as you are doing an upgrade and not a full install. If you hit the wrong button, windows will warn you that you are about to erase all the files. The best thing to do is to back up anything that you can't get back (documents, pictures, music, video, etc) on to dvd's, external hard drives or thumbdrives.

yeah. When you reinstall the operating system, your hard drive gets formatted, and a new OS is put on.

I would recommend backing up all of your needed files to a flash drive, or a cd.
