A childs soft toothbrush or even a piece of gauze wrapped around your finger. You want something gently abrasive. Use a dog toothpaste, not human. You can also use a little moistened baking soda. Hold the muzzle closed gently with one hand and use your finger or the brush and rub along the gums and teeth under the lips. Just do the outside teeth, that is where most of the tartar builds up. Do every day and your dog may not ever have to have his teeth cleaned! :)

There is special toothpaste made for dogs, available at most pet stores and not very expensive. If your dog has a lot of tartar build up on his teeth, you will need to get him a dental. Ask your vet about that, then his teeth get a sealant and you put something on them (with a swab) once a week - works very well but is a pit pricy. C.E.T. chews can be bought online or at your vets, they have an enzyme in them that cuts down on tartar build up. Don't neglect your dog's teeth, it can cause infections of the whole body. Some dogs do need a complete dental once in a while, brushing is just not enough. Other dogs are fine with just hard chews.

Your vets office should be able to order you some poultry flavored toothpaste and a special toothbrush for dogs. They also probably have oral rinses for your dog to reduce tartar build up and bad breath. The company that makes it is called Vet Solutions.

RAW meaty bones! Buy your dog some raw meaty soup bones from the grocery and let him chew on those all day and it will safely scrape the gunk from his teeth to a pearly white with no help from you. AND he will enjoy it MUCH mroe then any nasty paste and brushing. This is how dogs in nature keep their mouths healthy. They chew on raw meaty bones. This will greatly reduce bad breath as well.

They make beef and chicken flavored toothpast just for dogs and it comes with a doggie toothbrush or you can use a soft childrens toothbrush. You can buy it at your local petshop or they even have it at walmart. Good luck

They make a special tooth paste for dogs. You can find it at any good pet store. Don't use human tooth paste because it foams up too much and isn't meant to be swallowed.
