The following is quoted from a description of a picture taken with a digital camera. Can someone tell me what it means, please.

" Auto mode, 1/320th, f3.5, 58.7mm"

Auto mode: the shutter speed and aperture setting (see below) were calculated and set by in-camera software. The photographer could have chosen to set the shutter speed and/ or aperture manually for more creative control.

1/320: the shutter speed was 1/320th, i.e. 0.003125 second. Not extremely fast, but it will freeze the action most of the time.

f3.5: the aperture (lens opening) was fairly large, which makes for a relatively fast shutter speed. It also usually creates a blurry foreground/ background, where just the subject is in sharp focus. Nice for portraits but not ideal for landscapes.

58.7mm: the zoom was set for a normal field of view; midway between wide-angle and telephoto.

Of course, if it's a digital camera, 58.7 mm COULD be anything from an equivalent of 58.7 to 88 to 283 to 354 mm. (Playing the Devil's Advocate here.............)
