Teach them the "quiet" command. Everytime they bark tell them quiet, if they stop give them a treat, if not keep trying. You can also distract them with something that will make them stop at the same time you say quiet.

All dogs bark every now and again, but constant barking and whining can be disturbing or annoying to neighbours. There are many reasons why your dog may bark:
Loneliness
Boredom or frustration
When seeking attention
Defending his territory
Medical problems
So, you can,

Start training your dog as early as possible to prevent bad habits
Get your dog used to being alone - start by putting him into another room for a few minutes then gradually build up the time you leave him alone. Don't make a fuss of him when you leave him and do not return until he is quiet for a while - when you do return praise him for his good behaviour.
Some dogs bark because they want to join in with what going on outside - if this is the problem leave him in an area where he cannot see outside .
Some dogs will calm down if they can hear a human voice - try leaving a radio on (at low volume!)
Try not to leave your dog for long periods, but if you have to then make sure you walk him before you go out and leave him in a comfortable bed with his favourite toys in a well ventilated room. If you are unable to get back home during the day, see if someone can walk him or let him out in the garden if you have one.

They sell things call "shock collars". What they do is every time your dog barks it sends a very tiny shock through the collar, not enough to harm the dog, just enough to startle it, it would be like sticking your tongue on a battery. This usually causes the dog to stop barking because they no longer want to get shocked. Also, if you have a dog that doesn't like water, you can get a spray bottle and spray it in the face when ever it barks.

I had the same problem. Dogs need to get out. If they are cooped up too long they become bored and bark at anything. I found when I started walking my dog an hour a day that helped a lot. Also using a spray bottle and squirting them when they bark will help. I notice that the more excercise and entertainment my dog gets, the quieter she becomes.

I read a technique once, but I have never tried it myself, barking doesn't bother me, and my dogs never seem to bark that much.

From what I remember, what you do is you take a treat and when the dog is barking, every time it barks, your treat and say "speak". Continue this until it barks when you say speak. Then what you do is you get it to speak and then when it stops barking, you use another command. I don't like quiet, because it can come across to harsh, I recommend "Thank You" or "hush"

Easy, teach your dogs the "quiet" command. Oh, you don't know how to teach that? Obedience classes, they will teach you about dog behavior and how to teach your dog. Do not use a squirt bottle or a shock collar. These are aversion methods and only teach your dog to fear you. You don't want your dog to obey any command because it fears you.
