I'm a fairly hardcore atheist, but that kind of thing really doesn't bother me. It's really just a matter of common courtesy and I certainly don't expect my Christian friends to behave like an atheist just because I'm in the neighborhood. Whenever I get accidentally "God Blessed," I just say, "Thank you" and don't make an issue of it.

Edit: Having read Markyyy's answer (above), I must admit that I too, usually respond by sneezing again, and again, and again.

most people say bless you. Without god in it. Either way an atheist would say thank you. Atheists do not get upset over things like that. If someone was polite enough to say bless you then i would say thank you with or without the god in it.

If it was a friend that knew you were an atheist then maybe they could say guzundheit, or whatever it is. But it really doesnt matter.

Most people in these parts just say "bless you."

I don't find it offensive as I don't have the word "atheist" tattooed on my head.

When someone else sneezes I usually say, and forgive my spelling,

"Allah year Hamakh"

Which is the Arabic equivalent. I say that for a few different reasons:

- To make people think about what they're saying when they say "bless you" to others.

- To spread tolerance of other cultures, religions and practices.

- To increase their cultural capital.

- To make them feel better for sneezing all over me.

I (an atheist) usually don't say anything when a person sneezes. It's not offensive at all for somebody to say "god bless you" to me when I sneeze.

I'm an athiest, and I DO say "bless you" when people sneeze. It's a tradition, and common courtesy. If they take it as a holy blessing, fine. Whatever. If not, well, most of my friends are athiest and/or agnostic, and they say "Thanks." No one has ever said, "I don't believe in God, don't say that to me." That's just rude.

I say God Bless You to everyone when they sneeze. Not because I'm Christian (I'm not) but because it's the polite thing to do.
