I have to do a semester long report for my religions class and we have to visit other churches (of different christain denomnations) and interview people who are of other religions. When I visit other churches and they ask why I'm there, how do I put nicely for a research project for school. (I'm a member of another church?)

Call the pastor/minister/bishop ahead of time and let him or her know what you're doing. Most people don't ask you "why" you are there when you go to their church the first time. If anyone asks how you came to know about their church, a more common question, just tell them that you are taking classes at (name of school) and doing research for a paper you are writing. It's very unlikely that anyone will be offended. If they are, then you have even more interesting info for your paper! :) Good luck!

The easiest thing to do is to just tell them the truth. That way you are not being decietful and I personallly think that if someone knows the truth from the very first - then it is much easier in the long run.
While I don't know if this is proper ediquette or not - it seems this would be the easiest way to confront the problem.
You might also call that church ( or whatever) and ask to talk to whom ever is in charge and tell them about what you are doing and get their thoughts.
Hopefully this is of some help.

Call the pastor, preist, minister or watever ahead of time and say hello, my name is watever and say what your beleifs are (religion, denomination, or it you dont have one) Im doing a project on other religions and i wanted to check your church out. Ask if there is anything you should know and ask if you could talk to them in person or over the phone for more information. Im sure theyd be overjoyed to teach you about their beleifs. If you go to a service, be respectful!

you shouldn't just show up- that is considered rude, not to mention some religions do not allow outsiders inside the building (like Islamic) Call the office of the church and speak to the pastor or rabbi (whatever applies) then explain to him or her what you need to do and see if they can assist you in accomplishing your goal- usually these people are quite accommodating of others that express a true interest in obtaining knowledge about the religion.
