See my previous questions about what happened, basically I had a very well trained dog, for some reason he snapped and bit a kid and was put to sleep today.

I went in and said goodbye and when I told the vet I can't be;eive this happened he looked me right in the eye and said, "what do you expect? its a pitbull."

Wow. I think I would've popped him in the jaw and/or balls for that.

On one hand, the vet should know better. On the other hand, Pit Bulls are popular dogs, and popular for the wrong reasons.

Frankly, stupid people get put bulls and rotties because they are big mean dogs. They want a status symbol. It's like the canine version of a monster-truck. This popularity leads to inbreading by puppy mills which, as a side affect, produces the aggressive nature that these same morons buy the dog for in the first place. Unfortunately for some owners (and VERY unfortunately for the dogs), it can also produce unpredictability and voilent outbursts. Pit bulls can be great dogs, but you'd be stupid not to take the reality of their history into account.

I've commented on your other questions regarding this situation.

But a vet should not have made that comment to you like that. It was uncalled for. No matter what the breed, If he wanted to make that comment he should have done it behind your back.

I personally do not care for pits that much (personal experiences).

Still again Thank you for speaking up on your pit attacking a child unprovoked. You did not run and hide or say it was not your dog. You came forward. I wish more pit owners were that way!
It goes to show even the most trained dog no matter that the breed can attack. I have seen it happen with my cousins little girl.

A vet really said that? Disgusting, I would've smacked him one even if I worked for him. I'd tell his boss he said that if I were you so at the very least he gets a quiet talking to about the small matter of Having a Bedside Manner.

The vet may have meant that if a pitbull bites someone it will always be judged harsher than any other breed, but it was still a highly inappropriate comment.

well let me tell you some vets are just tired of being bitten or some of their staff being bitten and then having to put the dog down when the ppl knew in the first place that there was a chance of this happening . sorry about your dog that is rough and he should not have said this to you at this time maybe later but not right then kind of unproffesional . again I m sorry for your loss.

Then this vet should not be practicing. As I said in my reply to you earlier today any dog can flip. Any dog from a Chihuahua like I have (4 in fact) to a Pit.

Im so sorry to hear about your dog. Hugs to you. I cant believe how ignorant that vet was. omg, i would never take another dog to them again, not any pet. I know that not everyone is a pit person, but if they had a problem w/ pits, they should of said, we dont see these breeds. As bad as that sounds. I haven had any of these issues w/ my vet,. sometimes she seems a little nervous around him, but then loosens up when he is there.
agian im so sorry, find another vet, and dont look back at them.

I read your other post and I think your vet is an A$$hole. Number 1 -- for being ignorant of the breed, and Number 2 -- for
being insensitive to your feelings. If and when you get another dog I know you won't be going back to this idiot.

Were you actually there to see him being put down? I hope you were because who knows if this vet would actually have put him down and not send him to a lab someplace, especially since he doesn't like pit bulls.

The vet could have chosen a better thing to say at that moment.

Pitbulls were bred to fight. Humans created the breed for that reason. It is built into their instincts. No matter how nice you are to them, or how kindly your raise them, they have that genetic make up. It is their instinct just like it's a beagle's instinct to follow it's nose. The vet was correct. But it should have been said at a different time in a better way.

WOW! As if what you are going through (if it really happened!) wasnt hard enough to start with! IF the vet really said that he is a heartless @$$ hole!... That doesnt seem right to me though! I have never heard of a vet talking bad about "pit bulls"... Every vet I have known loves all animals, thats why they do what they do! And, most of the time vets stick up for "pit bulls" saying that they havent had any problems with them! I have heard MANY vets say they mabey had one or two "pit bull" growl at them, so they were muzzled and everything was fine! Those same vets have said that they have had problems (like being bit) with breeds like labs, golden retrievers and dalmations! Like I just said, vets normaly stick up for "pit bulls" because they know the FACTS! They know that "pit bulls" are 3 of the most stable people-friendly breeds in existence! They know that they are very tolerant and very loving! So.. I dont know what his problem was but, he is not a very good vet or person if he said that to you! : (

*I just have to add that the three "pit bull" breeds... American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire bull Terriers are not big breeds. I have seen alot of people mention that they are big breeds or people get them because they want big dogs. The APBT ranges in size from 22 pounds to 110 pounds (rare), with most common being between 35-55 pounds, in fact the original APBTs were between 20-40 pounds and were bred small for the purpose of fighting. These dogs are carying from small to extra large. A very common misconception is that APBTs are muscle bound (viscous) hulks that weigh around 85 pounds and this is generally not the majority, MOST of the APBTs that ARE large have been crossed with other breeds... I do agree that alot of idiots get them to train the to be mean, abuse and neglect them! But, MOST people get "pit bulls" because they want a smart, sweet, loving, loyal, tolerant, obedient, devoted, gentle, funny.. just all around wonderful dog! lol! : )
