Salt causes water to freeze at lower temperatures, so therefore makes the slushy a lot colder and won't melt as fast.

Salt and ice makes things a lot colder! I know from experience because just last week we did an experiment in chemistry with salt and ice and it was a lot colder than normal ice! So maybe so that the slushy won't melt and you can actually chew it and enjoy it!
