The ban on pork comes from the Jewish dietary laws in to Islam. These are the two major faiths that ban pork. Both religions also have a nomadic cultural base. Pigs are generally only raised by settlers. Nomadic people generally consider settlers dirty, due to the proximity of the settlers to their own waste. This could be the basis for the ban on pork. It's settler food and therefore dirty.

Also, as Simon T has pointed out, the climate where these religions emerged is hot and pork spoils quickly.

Pork is considered dirty because of eating habits. Will eat other animals etc.

Pork also causes flatulence, as far as I've noticed.

Pork meat contains and holds more chemicals and possibly bacteria than other meat. This is due to a pig being so hardy.

My opinion.

Because if you do not cook it properly it can make you very sick.

Religions founded in areas where cooking conditions are not very good are more successful if they ban pork. The same goes for shellfish.

Also stopping the mixing of meat and milk is a good one. Meat tends to have a lot of nasty germs on the surface. Milk is a perfect breading ground.

Not reusing utensils also stops the spread of germs.

It is banned under the rules of Kashruth because it is an unclean animal (Back in the old days, there was a good chance of getting disease from eating it, so the rule was just good sense). Islam follows many of the same rules, as it came after Judaism.

you can eat it if ya want, but just remember pigs have no sweat glands and they will eat anything there fore you eat what the pig eats. And if you are a city folk I'll let you in on a secret they are really really nasty.

it is an unclean meat.that is why when JESUS healed the man who was possessed he drove the evil spirits into the herd of swine and then the swine went over the cliff to their deaths.
