For the same reason that people believe in reincarnation or otherkin or whatever - I think we have a desire to feel somehow special, and what's more special than having history end in your lifetime?
A second possibility is the also-very-human tendency to believe that the world is going to hell in a handbasket. "Kids-these-days" rants have been recorded since Periclean Athens, if I remember correctly.
A third possibility is failure of imagination. It's difficult to speculate on possibilities more than a few generations ahead with significant accuracy (I'm sure actual citizens of the 24th century will laugh and laugh at Star Trek, if any copies survive), so, sod it, world's going to end in my grandchildren's lifetime.
Any or all of these three might have something to do with it. Prophecy is just opportunism taking advantage of human tendencies.

If you read the Bible, you will see that things are as Jesus said they would be.
People are lovers of themselves, lovers of money, there is no natural affection in families, people are hateful, deceitful, liars, thieves, killers and I can go on.
Yes, there has always been wars on earth. BUT only since 1914 has there been major wars earth wide. Earthquakes have increased in both frequency and intensity worldwide. Famine is increasing every day. Millions of people go to bed hungry every night - worldwide. Pestilence - disease like AIDS and Malaria spread worldwide killing millions. Not to mention that man is ruining the earth. The global weather system is just about ruined because of pollution and de-forestation.
The good news of God's kingdom is being preached in all the inhabited earth. And the ones doing this work are objects of hatred, just as the Bible says.
So any reasonable person should be able to see the signs if they just look. Read it in your own Bible.

The bible shows signs of the end times as
in mark 13, things that were written long ago
that are appearing now.
Many prophecies were fullfilled throughout
the bible and the return of christ is another
yet to happen.
This really gets people wondering when but really no man really knows when he comes
as scripture dictates.

They don't know how to use their brains. The world has always been plagued with terrible things, and it always will be. With our ability to communicate today, we instantly know of any atrocity occurring all across the globe. Things are no worse (or better) than they were at the time of Christ!
