Hi - I have an Amazon bird that has worn away a lot of paint from the bird cage. I have bought a new one but it is smaller than the old one so I would like to refinish the old one. Is it safe to just spray paint it with white rustoleum? It has proven a little difficult to find a place that will sand blast and powder-coat a large cage.

Just to clarify, Yola is not eating the paint finish, it's just worn away from years of crawling all over it.

I just found a place where I least expected it! Check around to auto body shops where they do "powder coating" They have all the equipment and it's not that bad, as compared to buying a new large one. I found a place throuogh craigslist who was advertising to "re-paint props" for boats. He wrote back, I sent him measurments and a picture, and he's doing it all for 50.00. Not Bad? Well my choices for colors were not that great but I needed to repaint this one for my new Baby Macaw!

Good Luck

Hello, I have had the same problem with some of my cages over the years. After reading many labels and calling some of the help lines on them, the safest spray paint I could find was indeed Rustoleum* . Many said they were toxic if injested, but Rustoleum* is labelled even safe for childrens toys and furniture. Soooo, I have indeed used steel wool to clean any loose paint chips off of the cage and then repainted with Rustoleum*. I used several coats, letting it dry well between each and DEFINATELY paint outside and not near any open windows where your bird could be exposed to the fumes. You also need to let the cage dry outside until the smell is gone from the new paint. I have never had any adverse reactions from my birds and have been using the Rustoleum* on my old cages for many years now. It of course does not hold up to wear as well as having it powder coated would.

Call or e-mail California King Cages and ask for the type of paint that is used on bird cages. I did this many years ago when I had an old rusting cage and was able to buy from them. Hopefully you still can.

OMG!!! Don't do that! It will kill the bird! Just get a new and bigger cage. If the bird is eating the paint then it is going nuerotic. That is do to not enough attention. Give it lots of toys and once a month move them around or replace them. They will get as smart as a two year old child so you have to keep them entertained. Lots of out time from the cage, lots of toys, and talk to them alot.

Use a emery paper and rub the paint off. Then either hand paint or spray paint, dry it and use it. If only paint has worn, it will be possible to use the old one itself.
