Genuine whisky is Scottish. Whiskey is of Irish origin (note the spelling). Other places do make it, but they can never be the real McCoy.

There are many types of whiskey, scotch is a whiskey, as is bourbon, as is rye. The only thing they share is a darker golden color. They're made of different base ingredients, and have different and distinct flavors. Even within a specific whiskey, (for example here, scotch) there are different flavors based on the age of the whiskey, the quality of ingredients, whether it's a single malt or not, etc. Cornflake #1 gave a thorough and good answer regarding scotch (I voted for him). Any good quality whiskey is best served straight, or on the rocks, and sipped slowly to appreciate the complexity of flavors.

It's has a flavor of it's own. all I can say is Jack Daniels is sweet compared to Seagram's 7
