It seems to me that no Atheist has ever killed anyone, or even hurt anyone in the name of Atheism. On the other hand people kill others in the name of religion all the time throughout history. Why is it that Atheism gets such a bad reputation when they don't cause anywhere near as much trouble as "religious people"?

I understand that Hitler was an Atheist, but he did not kill 6 million Jews and 5 million "others" in the name of Atheism. Stalin was also an Atheist, but he didn't kill people in the name of Atheism either.

I don't know why. It is odd because most athiests don't challenge religion they just don't follow one.

I dont get angry when someone tells me they are atheist.
There are some atheist that I like as people.
I dont even get angry when you say that religious people cause more harm and trouble than atheist. And that atheist dont kill in the name of atheism, though I disagree with you.
I dont know anyone in my area of this world that has ever said they killed someone in the name of their religion. Though I know this does happen. It is not such a large percentage of people that do such insane things. And just
because an atheist might do harm to someone and doesnt do so in the name of atheisim , does this make the action better some how?
Well thats just my thoughts thanks for the time.

First of all, people equate atheism with Stalinism (a political religion). Second it is really hard for SOME people to accept the fact that there is NOT one divine truth. Tell them your a Hindu and they feel sorry for you because you were raised in the "false" religion. Atheism is a choice.

I don't get angry at atheists unless they start bashing me on this site for no reason except that I believe in God and state my opinion if asked.
Yes, people have killed in the name of religion. Many people. What does that have to do w/ present day christians, catholics, methodists, etc.
Osama Bin Ladin is fighting a holy war right now against you and I. I can assure you........he has a worse reputation than you.

You'd think that Christians would have turned this question into their own drinking game (they are, after all, convinced that Jesus turned water into whine at one time, so whine's okay, right?)... but they haven't yet answered this question with any reasonable degree of consideration. At least, not that I've ever seen. Instead, it's simply an invitation to spit insults and conversion attempts at us. I really doubt if it'll be different this time, either.
[Edit] Although many Christians deny it, Hitler was Christian, not an Atheist. Link's below.

Sweetie I don't get angry when people tell me that they do not believe in God, I get hurt inside for them..if I show any anger it would be toward the thing that has blinded a person that God loves to keep them away from a God that loves and cares for them so much. You have the right to believe as you want to..free will. But that does not mean that I would hate you or condemn you , I would only make sure to lift you up in my prayers..I have atheist cousins I love them very much and I do not "preach" to them but simply live my life before them but they hate me because of Christ, this does not surprise me but it does hurt me. But I have to rebut one point and give you one name Hitler..he was an atheist and he targets the Jews who happened to be Gods chosen, so I have to totally disagree with your statement. Peace

I'm not sure where you got the idea that atheists never kill people, but that is creative.
Look, it's not the fact that you say you're an atheist that makes people angry, but the way you present yourself.
Even with your question, you've basically said, "I'm an atheist, not a murderer like all you religious people." Why shouldn't you expect an angry response?

people fear the unknown and that which threatens their beliefs. this goes both ways though, this section is good proof that many atheists get angy at christians simply because of what they believe

It's the same reason they fear Muslims or other ethnicities, or the reason entire wars are started:
They are afraid of people who are different, who don't conform to a specific "mold."
