If you are a parent I would recommend a good sturdy car, and something without allot of acceleration, but everybody wants a sports car for their first car. Try to let your teenager help pick it out. They will take better care of a car they like.

A good running car that is inexpensive so you can pay cash, and get liability only insurance. My bias has always been to learn on a manual transmission, then you can drive any car later on. A nice inexpensive car that is inexpensive to repair and drive is a VW rabbit/golf or jetta.

For a beginning driver, a Honda Civic is a great car. They are super reliable and pretty easy to control if you are just learning. For something slightly bigger, go for the Accord.

Just about any 2nd hand manual car as long as it runs well. Dont get a big powerful car!! Power steering helps...especially with parking.
