"HM" is a rating, it stands for Hospital Corpsman, or a "medic".
the "1" stands for Petty Officer First Class.
Petty Officer first class means you are 6th on the rank of 9 "enlisted" ranks.
"enlisted" refers to someone who does not have a college degree to qualify for a "commison" to become an officer, or they DO have college but simply didnt seek a commision.
The Paygrade is E-6

Basically if the Navy is a company the guys who do the "corporate" side would be officers. The guys who actually do manual labor or "blue collar" are the enlisted.

E-6 is pretty high on the food chain since the Navy is VERY bottom heavy, think of this person as a "store manager" at a Starbucks. His Chief would be the "regional manager" (Chief is E-7 through E-8 "Senior" Chief and E-9 "Master" Chief). Above them would be officers. Those are the guys who work at the Starbucks main office headquarters, wear ties and do paperwork (all the way from the mail room to the CEO). I hope this breaks it down.

What rank is HM1 in the Navy?

HM means Corpsman (hospitalman) and the 1 means 1st Class Petty Officer, or E-6. new recruits are E-1s and the highest enlisted rank is E-9. realistically E-6 is right in the middle.
