If you try to think of nothing, you end up thinking of something. Nothing is something. Nothing exists so it is something in and of itself. If you think of "nothing", then you are still thinking of something in a way. Besides, if you PURPOSEFULLY set out to think of nothing, you end up focusing on something to clear your mind or something else that ends up being a thought. Your mind is constantly active. Even when you are sleeping, you are dreaming of something. Your mind doesn't rest. Some days, I wish that I could think of absolutely nothing because perhaps then I could have a little peace.

Yes I can and I find "nothing" illogical. Everything is composed of something. The trained mind can learn to cultivate calmness and equanimity, but never actually rest on "nothing" since "nothing" cannot exist.

Once when I was young I achieved a moment of perfect mental stillness. I saw what I was seeing, but did not consider it, nor identify it. I heard what I was hearing, but gave it no source, nor identified it. It was great. I don't know how I did it.

When it all gets too much I close my eyes focus on my breathing and image the color black. Technically I'm thinking about breathing but it's as close as I can get to nothing.

Yes, I do it all the time. It does take practice and perseverance. The word, "try" is problematic, in that it implies effort, and there is no effort in mind.
