First and foremost. . .if you can RUN. . . RUN away! Pride vs. Knife = Knife wins. . .no matter how good you are. If you want to learn real knife fighting techniques, then I say find a really good teacher in your are. Filipino martial arts have great systems, due to they're weapon based first. I have learned from quite a few really good teachers. . .and they all say that in a knife fight, the only one that wins is the one that BLEEDS less. Expect to be cut. The only way you can "win" is if you had a gun. And with that, it's not even guaranteed. Violence is never the first resort. . .it should be last. Because if you have to resort to it. . .you've already lost, my friend.

defense against a knife is largely a MYTH.

ANY defense is going to still be a desperation move EVEN IF YOU HAVE A GUN ON YOU.

Why?

For the main reason is that you will not be walking around with your gun out and the knife attack will come as a surprise.

Looking at "compliant" training videos of how one will theoretically stop a knife attack is not going to help you. Even training in those will not help.

You need to understand that YOU WILL BE CUT. Odds are you won't even know a knife is in play until its too late.

Your best bet is to learn how to fight using a knife or other small weapon but still if you are taken by surprise, you are in trouble.

If you know its coming you can run. or pick up a weapon or put a slug into them if you are carrying. However the main thing here is that you likely WON'T know its coming.

why mention this?
because you dont' want to get a false sense of security over some prearranged controlled drills you did in class. Real life doesn't work that way. Its one thing if you get your butt whipped, its another if your teacher is lying to you and giving you a false sense of security about stopping a deadly weapon.

My advice to you is to learn something about knife and knife defence, but always put it in the context of reality and realize that it is still going to be a highly risky situation.

No matter how well trained you are, even someone with no idea how to use a weapon like that has a HUGE advantage over you.

I've faced knives before and there's only three things you can do especially if you have no self defense training and are not carrying a gun:
1. Run
2. Pick up a rock or stick or anything you can use as a weapon and use it without hesitation.
3. Grapple for possesion of the knife and try to use it on him.

But the best thing to do is run and find the nearest crowd, if he persists then pick up a weapon use it on him then run again. In a worst case scenario, you'd probably be forced to grapple with him and try to disarm him then use the knife on him if you can. But if he's an experienced knife fighter, your chances are slim and you better pray somebody tries to help or at least scare him off like what happened. Just one thing, once you've decided to fight, there must be no hesitation, you go all out and don't stop til he's down and incapable of getting up to hurt you, otherwise you're better off to just keep on running.

Thank God that person in the car came along right then!
I know that a lot of schools teach defense against knife attack, but I don't know how effective it would be in an actual attack. What I have always observed in these classes is that they don't use real knives and they practice in rehearsed, predictable, 3/4 speed movements in well lit rooms. It's easy to go through the motions pretty successfully under those conditions, but what about in the real world. There you are going to be under a lot more stress, it may be dark and you've got someone who actually wants to harm you taking full speed, unpredictable lashes at you with a sharp instrument.

My advice is that you avoid places and situations where this may occur. Always be aware of your surroundings and don't look like a victim. If you look like someone who knows how to fight, like someone who can handle himself you are less likely to be targeted as a victim. Most thugs want easy marks. Should it happen to you someday, run for your life if you can. If you can't, then fight for your life. Obviously having some knife defense training is better than none, but don't rely on it if you can escape instead of fighting.

Firstly, make sure your safe, look confident, try not to go out too much at night, do not enter places with little people (e.g. alleyways) and make sure you are always in a well lit road. Those basic safety precautions.
Next you may want to take up a martial art class, yes you say you know how to fight, but it is always handy to take up a class. (Please note: Becoming fantastic in one martial art does not mean no-one can beat you, you need to think about street fighting and fighting dirty). Martial arts help you to gain balance which is usually needed in a fight.
Now for knife and knife-like weapons, again this is covered by some martial art classes. Be sure to research which martial art you're going to take as some (like capoeira) do not train with weapons. I found that Jujitsu helps, but alot of m.a's do.

My(Jujitsu) technique...1) Block the hand thats coming to stab you. Twist the wrist and sidestep (so now you should be to your attackers side), elbow them in the face wrap your arm around the top part of their arm (so you should have your arm wrapped in their higher part of the arm and holding their wrist). Push down on their wrists (Note: This is hard to do as you may not wrap your arm properly, ask a friend if you can try on them and if they can honestly say)

2) (Ok, I can't remember this one, I'll edit this answer and type it in when I do)

Basically (Mainly) You have to block them, then grab their wrists and twist it. Then it is best if you make them feel pain on their arm which is usually done by pushing the elbow up with an open palm. (I think this is Tai Chi)

You might want to surf around Youtube.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRe_gBZbk1k Is Krav Maga (Spelling) way of disarming a knife...

Anyway, again firstly precaution. Also it is best not to carry any weapon with you as you can easily be disarmed the same way and the attacker can grab it. Suprising your attacker is great, best to carry an alarm (loud) and torch. Anything you can throw is great for self defense, also look at the weapon. If they are just randomly slashing use something like a chair for self defence (Hold the back bit and hit him with the legs while the seat part will be defence) or you could stop it with a bag (get him/her stab the knife on a bag)Listen to your instincts etc, remember your body has a natural defence system like adrenaline (fight or flight) best thing to do is flight.

(EDit) Listen to NC, he is right, DO NOT CARRY A WEAPON, someone can easily disarm it from you, besides you can get into a lot of trouble. I agree with NC but I was explaining basic moves. I mentioned Martial arts to help you balance, what is strength without balance? I recently got a street survival handbook, and it overemphasized balance, because if you do anything and youre off balance you can easily be thrown to the floor. I got the SAS street survival guide just today (and finished it as well today)... prehaps you should read one?

Dude knives can be quite difficult in that you have to get close enough to be stabbed to do anything.

#1 Run away!
#2 Unless you really know how to fight (i.e marshal art not brawling) just give it up

I should point this out that even at like 20 or 30 feet a man with a knife beats a holstered gun.

In this sort of thing, your first priority is to get away. If that is not an option early on in the conflict, your second goal is to get a weapon yourself, preferably something with length to it. (a stick is good) Improvise. Don't take your eye off the weapon, you don't want it to stab you. Make a checklist of where you'd least like to be stabbed, considering this, it's better to get cut on the arm than the torso or face. If you end up grabbing his arm or hand, don't leave go for anything, hold on and start kicking or hitting vital points. Repeat. Once you think you can get away, run.

that kind of jiujitsu won't protect you in real life. of course, that kind of martial arts is deadly, but in competition, not practice. also, sparring partners don't hit back. if someone grabs your wrist, the instructors would teach you a fourteen step process that you're never going to be able to do in real life when you are attacked and suprised. step on their foot, and they'll let go of your wrist. against a good knife fighter, run. I've seen what they can do. if its a thug with a cheap butterfly knife, take off your shirt or sweater and wrap it around your arm. that way you can take strikes with the knife without getting cut. trust me, martial arts is good in competition but in real life the stuff you learn on the streets like what I've just told you is way more important.

I carry a colt tactical lightweight commander in .45, It is an awesome defense, but if you pull it you better be ready to use it, i have only had to discharge my weapon once, and that prevented me from being carjacked and possibly killed! I have been stabbed twice, once in the palm of my hand trying to stop from being stabbed, and once in the face cut a about a four inch gash in my left cheek. I had to have plastic surgery. If you can back out of a situation that really is the best defense!

call the keep proprietors in that section and tell them in a very business business enterprise like way that your no longer buying there untill they have that section wiped sparkling up of the undesirable element. Then call some community information communities. Then write on your states attorny generall. that gets the law enforcement officers off there asses, the business business enterprise on the law enforcement officers asses, the situation will aired for all to start seeing and asking approximately. The attorny generall would be notified via the information and help keep the ball rolling, then finnaly the thugs gets the leap.
