I think the ultimate question is "Why are we here?" That's what sets humans apart from every other living organism--self-consciousness and awareness of our mortality.

As far as there being an ultimate answer, I think it's the kind of thing that even if one spends their whole lives looking for it and yet never finds it, it would not be a wasted life, either way.
