German shepards are very easy to teach and learn quickly. With the hazard of they are VERY territorial and are not the best dogs if you have children or other pets. I have a German Shepard and he is a handful. They are also very big and take up space so if you are going to get one you will have to devote alot of time to it.

I hate german "shepards." But I absolutely adore my two german SHEPHERDS! Sorry, one of my pet peeves is the way so many people misspell this breed's name....it's really easy to remember if you remember that they were originally bred to Herd Sheep...hence they are Shep-Herds.

Most of the german shepherds I've known have been very quick learners and many of them were easy to teach. However, their intelligence means that you have to be consistent with them and keep the lessons moving along or else they'll get bored. If you aren't consistent, they will decide that the rules only apply some of the time.

As for staying in the yard, that has very little to do with breed. If the dog is left alone in the back yard they will get bored and they will get out. Just don't leave the dog unsupervised in the yard and you won't have that problem anymore!

I have had three german shepards and they are too me one of the best dogs. They are loyal and protective when need be. Excellent watch dogs and very intelligent. You need to be stern with them when they are young but you really need to do that with almost any breed or they will walk all over you. My shepards never left my side. I open the door and they go potty and come back in. When we go on walks they were always off leash but I also train my dogs to be the best dogs. I don't tolerate a dog that doesn't listen and needs a leash all the time. I hope this helps you out!

I genuinely love these dogs. If you want an active dog that comes with its own personality, get a German Shepherd. So long as you get the right one (check out the environment where the dog comes from), they are loyal and trainable and are happy with their own company, so you can leave the dog in the back yard (on a chain)

Look at the following website for more info:

for really good general info, go to:

and click on all of the links

This is a working breed that will require A LOT of exercise - a dog is never just for Christmas - and getting a dog as a fashion accessory should be a criminal offense. Also, make sure you get good insurance against health issues.

Good luck

They are very smart but also can be very mean. They have to be made to do things otherwise they will get bored. I have been tormented by 3 different German Shepherds in my life. Once when I was a kid, then as a teenager I could not get to and from the bus stop for one standing in the road growling at me hoping the owner would appear. I also saw that same one kill a cat and play catch with it-tossing it up about 10 feet in the air repeatedly. Another German Shepherd would not allow me to get from my house to my rural mail box.

German Shepard's are very teachable. They learn quickly, but they need someone that is going to be dominate. They need someone that will be the pack leader or else they might walk all over you! They are a nice breed but really read up on them before getting one.

german shepards are an easily trained dog, they can be trained to stay in your yard, start with general commands and reward them when done correctly. as far as dogs staying in your yard , depending on where you live, ex: by a road or on many acres.
dogs are dogs and like to stray and chace other animals or cars.i would always use a fence or an invisable fence to keep a large dog in the yard.

There a Huge dog. Can turn on even the owner. Back a food truck up to your back door cause they'll empty out a 50 pound bag licky split. But if your good with dogs and learn how to handle them I'm sure they'd make a good pet.

German Shephards are one of the best. That is why the are popular as police dogs. They are quick learners and can adapt quickly.
