I'm considering pet health care coverage and I am seeking opinions from people who have it or have had it. Was it valuable, have you used it? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Do your research, it's hard to find a decent insurance company and often you only find out if you've got a good one when you have to claim!

Generally the cheaper the insurance, the less comprehensive the cover. This is fine if you never have to claim, but if your animal ends up developing a lifelong condition such as arthritis or diabetes, there aren't many companies that will cover for this beyond a set amount of money so it becomes fairly useless. Many companies will only pay out for one condition one time, so say your pet breaks it's leg when it's young you'll probably never be able to claim for anything that goes wrong with that leg (or possibly any leg) for the rest of it's life.

I don't know where you're from, but I hope you have access to Kennel Club or Petplan insurance as these are the best I know of. They cover for life and even pay out for things like prescription diets. Invaluable for an older pet. The website is www.petplan.com.

If you come across E and L or DirectLine in your searchings, stay the hell away, they're the worst for ever paying out!

I won't say not to get pet insurance but if you have a fairly healthy cat you probably will never need the insurance. You can take the money you would spend in premiums and put it in a saving account. Then when something comes up you have the money on hand and don't have to mess with claims and such. This will normally provide you with all the money you need throughout the cat's lifetime. It's a financial gamble either way. You have to decide which way is best for you but the worst thing you can do is nothing and then be hit with unexpected vet bills you can't pay. Good for you for caring enough for your cat to research this.
