My son fell about 2 hours ago, and he hit the corner of the door. So he had a huge indention and it didn't break open, just scratched, but it's purple/blue, and really swollen. Right in the front side of his head. He's getting sleepy now. Should i let him go to sleep? again it was about 2 hours ago, he acted fine afterwards, talkin and playing like normal. Should i worry or take him in to the ER?

I called his Doctor and he said as long as he's not throwing up, and since it happened so long ago, to just let him sleep and when he wakes up if he is acting weird then to take him in. He said there is nothing they can really do for it if it was cracked or something, but to just watch him close. THanks to everyone who has helped!!

If it is not normal for him to be sleepy this time of day, yes take him in. You don't say how old he is, but why don't you call his pediatrician and see what he/she advise you to do.

I had always heard that you keep a child awake after a head injury but I don't know for how long or why really. If he has any stomach upset at all it may be a concussion so I would definitely take him in.

Is he old enough to tell you how he feels? If so it will be easier. If he is not old enough to talk or to express his feelings, it may be best to take him in. If not to the ER, at least to his doctor tomorrow.

I hope everything is OK. Let us know, OK?

My daughter has hit her head pretty bad a couple of times. Our pediatrician told me I could always take her to the ER if it would make me feel better, but that usually if they don't lose consciousness for a little while right after the bump, vomit, or complain of a bad headache (in a baby too young to speak that would probably show up as unusual fussiness), then they most likely don't have a concussion. If this is his usual naptime, then it would be normal for him to be sleepy. If he doesn't take naps and he's really sleepy, that might be a sign of a problem.

I think you should call your doctor, and see what they think you should do. Don't worry that they're going to blame you or hassle you for your son bumping his head...one of the times my daughter bumped her head was on the corner of the kitchen wall, and I was crying when I called our pediatrician, and he told me that babies just have large heads in proportion to the rest of their bodies, and so it's not unusual that when they fall it will be their heads that get bumped.

he's fine if he didnt lose conciousness right after.. if hes been up for two hours, let him sleep.

My neighbors son was over (2yrs old) he was jumping and spinning and hit the middle of his forehead on the corner of the window sill.. He also had a huge swollen blue indention. He was fine. I hope that eases your mind for a while.

After his nap just watch to make sure hes acting like himself.
And call a nurse if you need professional calming down. they will tell you what to look for. even a really good website.

First of all, did you call his pediatrician?? When you could have just brought him in for normal office hours before, now you are talking about whether or not to sit in an ER waiting room for hours. with a little boy.
Second of all, is it abnormal that he is sleepy now? Is it or was it nap time? If it's normal than I wouldn't worry about that.
Just so you know it is supposed to be a good sign that his head is swollen. It means that the swelling isn't pushing inward, it's pushing out.
But, still, call your pediatricians after hours service. Find out what they say. I want to say he is fine. My daughter bumps her head all the time and I have never taken her to the ER.
good luck!

I wouldnt let him fall asleep. My brother got hit with a bat and they made him stay up for a while then we had to wake him up every 2 hrs. I would take him to the er just to make sure he dont have a concussion!

Hope It All Works Out Fine! ♥

Around his forehead, or the beginning of his hair line area would just be another learning experience, being around the temple area would cause him to pass out or be semi groggy for a bit. Kids also have a soft spot on the top of their head, that would also be a danger spot to watch out for. But, always being on the safe side because he is a child. Take him to the emergency room and have him checked out thoroughly by an on board physician, always better safe than sorry.
