I want to DEP into the Navy as a CTN, I've heard that some people have done it, I've heard that you needed to crossrate from a CTO to a CTN rather than an IT.
Not sure what exactly to believe. Could somebody give me a definitive answer about DEPing in as a CTN?

Your best option would likely be to ask a recruiter. I was an ET1 when I left the NAV and worked regularly with the CTs. I know at the time (two years ago) the community was being merged as were many others. If you are in fact wanting to go CTN (not CTM?) then you should be able to get it on your contract. That does not mean you won't start out as an operator before getting your C school, the CTM guys used to do that. They would go to a command get some experience and then go to the next school, while others were sent strait to school. It was all a matter of if the schools were backed up or bodies needed in the fleet at the time. Again, it has been a couple days since I was there so your recruiter should be able to fill in the blanks. If you are interested in technology you may also want to take a look at the IT, ET, or FC communities. Basically ITs run radios and do computer setups and software repairs. ETs and FCs are the hardware side who make physical repairs to electronic equipment including radars, radios, Xerox machines and the fire control and targeting computers for weapons systems. The big difference being that FCs (Fire Control Man) deal with weapons systems and also operate them, ETs (Electronic Technician) do just about everything else and do not operate their own equipment. ETs are sometimes called Everything Techs, because likely you will work on just about anything with electricity in it even if it falls under somebody else's job. If you find people who did or do these jobs ask them about it. Just beware they have fierce rivalries between the rates and someone from one rate will try to play down the importance of the others, but they all work together closely. My best friend from high school was an FC and we always argue about who is the better trained tech. Hope this was some kind of help.

CTN is now open to first termers.

as long as your line scores qualify you, you can get a Clearance, and there are openings, you have a shot at it.

But it all depends on the needs of the Navy.

The rules are changing all of the time. Talk to a recruiter and they can give the latest and most accurate answers.
