Thankfully I'm not in a situation currently to really need to worry about this...but I thought I'd ask just in case it ever comes up.
If a soldier has some kind of emergency at home while deployed to Iraq...something to warrant emergency leave...would that leave affect the R&R (mid deployment leave or whatever people call it) they already have planned?

Also...if some kind of emergency comes up while a soldier's on R&R, can it be extended? And what if it comes after they've already had their R&R?

You generally can't use leave you don't have; sometimes, they'll let you go in the hole a few days, sometimes up to three or four, but that's just leave you haven't earned yet... and normally they won't do that. If you use some of your accrued leave for emergence leave, that comes out of the total accrued leave days you have, and therefore can possibly limit the amount of time you can take off for other leave, such as the typical month-long block leave they let you have once you redeploy back home and finish the week-long reintegration. An exception would be whether your command, if they're feeling particularly generous, decides to possibly send you off on R&R on a pass, instead of signing leave papers. Technically, going on leave requires a bit more paperwork than a pass, so I would hope (ideally, of course) that this idea has occurred to as least SOME commanders. I guess it all depends on how benevolent they happen to be feeling that day--and how many days the pass would be for, of course.

Depends on the command. Some are real hard on the leave issue. Also would it be fair for a knuckle-head to go home for two weeks then another two weeks plus a mini vacation to Qatar? ( Answer yes if it is YOU!, heh)

well, while my husband was in iraq , one of his soldiers did go on ER leave and his R & R was canceld.they were told that it depends on the command if they let u still go on R & R after u been on ER leave for up to 2 weeks. in this case the soldier returned from ER leave 2 weeks b4 his R & R would've started .

yes. This happened to my cousin. he was sent home on EL for his mother's death, and it was charged as his regular R&R.
so techncially, he wasn't charged leave, per se, but he had to burn his R&R before he was scheduled to.
SOME Commands, when they are able, do not make them take R&R as their EL, or try to allwo them to take R&R later on in the deployment again.

Yes, it will use up his leave time.
If he is on leave and an emergency comes up, the leave time can be extended, and will still use up his leave time.
If he is out of leave time, he can borrow towards his future leave time.
