I have a begal that is due to have puppies any day now. I have heard that the vet can tell by taking their temperature whether or not she is about to give birth. Is this true? If so, does the temp go up or down and if so how many degrees. What is the normal temp for a dog?

normal is 101.3 and it'll drop to 99.5 or lower, however, not all dogs' experience this temperature drop, so don't be fooled. She shouldn't be allowed out alone a day or 2 before she's due just to be safe. Before whelping, she'll likely stop eating, she'll be restless and many of them don't like to let their owners out of sight.

Yes a dogs temp drops 1 to 2 degrees before going into labor. Also look for signs of nesting, heavy panting, and usually no intrest in food. A normal dogs temp is around 101 but if you have not been monitering her temp it makes it a little harder.

I am sure their temperament does change.. I know it does in humans, so why not in other mammals?

A dogs temperature is usually 101 degrees. The temp decreases just before having the puppies to 99 degrees Fahrenheit a day before she gives birth. Does the very same thing in people too!

I have worked in pets store for a long time and seen alot of hamsters be born, there isn't too much you can do. Baby hamsters don't need any special light or or habitat change. The bedding should be something soft enough to build a nest in where she will have her babies and they should stay in there for a few days. They sell soft cotton like bedding at pet stores you could mix a little of that in with the normal bedding just make sure you are NOT using cedar bedding the aroma can be deadly to small animals. The only other thing I can recommend is to make sure your using a water bottle instead of a dish because the babies will drowned if they climb in. Also, hamsters become very protective so be weary trying to touch or pick up her babies.

The temperature usually drops below 100F within 24 hours of giving birth. Just pick up a cheap digital rectal thermometer and check her temp every 8 hours. Normal temperature is between 100F and 102.5F. See what hers normally is. When you see a drop that stays below 100F, then puppies should be coming within a day.

Normal for most dogs in 101.2 if you take your dogs temp. rectally and it goes down to 98 degrees it will mean she may be going into labor with in 12 to 24 hours.

I think that anyone can determine when their dog is going into labor by observing a number of symptoms, rather than just temperature. You can estimate this by knowing when your dog was bred (they are pregnant for approximately 8 weeks). You will know when your dog has gone into labor by her nesting behavior and other physical signs. Good luck!
