nobody deserves to be taken advantage of. unfortunately it happens to thousands of vehicle purchasers everyday, whether they go alone or not. They only way to protect yourself is to research your purchase beforehand. If you go in knowing what your getting and knowing what its worth you are much less likely to get "screwed". If you are buying from a new or used dealer they are MUCH more likely to "deal" with you than to let you walk away without a sale!

Of course not. You are an intelligent, well-written (and most likely well-spoken) woman. Just be sure of how much you want to spend and what you want in a car before you go shopping. After you see a car you like within your price range, check online (either Kelly Blue Book or Edmonds.com) and see if the price is fair. Let the car dealer know that you are doing this. Get a guarantee that the vehicle can pass the emissions test (I guess they have the tests everywhere, I know they do where I live); see what type of warranty they will give you on the car.
Good luck to you. A car is a big purchase and kind of scary but you will be happy when you have your own vehicle.
A used car is a so much better deal financially than a new one, but we usually take our chances. You will get a better price from a private party, but you will have to go to them (usually) and of course you are only seeing one car at a time. There is not much recourse against a private party except small claim court, whereas a reputable dealer will want you to be a satisfied customer.

depending on what kind of person you are (i'm assuming you're a good one) you don't deserve to be taken advantage of. however, it would behoove you to learn as much as you can about the specific car's value, features, the bargaining process, potential problems the vehicle might have in regards to age, condition, mileage, and inherent design flaws. the best advice would be to be patient and maintain the ability to walk away from a car if it doesn't seem right. don't let yourself be dazzled w/ the "bling factor" i recently looked at a car for a friend that was looking and it was apparent within about 5 minutes that it didn't matter what may be wrong w/ the car or the price that she was paying--she wanted to buy it for the stereo system and the tinted windows...

No but it happens a lot Take your brother or another man Car salesmen wrongly think women are not car smart. It helps if the guy knows his cars or can out bs the salesman.. I used to put this on every contract This Offer subject to bankers approval if they would not agree I walked out. after thinking it over and not happy got the bank to deny the loan.

No you don't. But personally, I have always found that male sales people talk down to me and act as if I must not know anything about cars since I'm a woman. I just can't stand it. I just bring my husband whenever I can, I feel more comfortable that way - sad, but true.

Of course not. Just take the car to a reputable mechanic to have it checked out before you buy it.

What makes you think you'll be taken advantage of? Because you are a woman? Because you are a woman of colour?

i have done it several times by myself...the key is, be prepared to walk away. know what you can spend. know what you want...if they can't give it to you, or try to talk you into something more expensive...just walk away.
oh...and find a mechanic that would be willing to look at it BEFORE you purchase. reputible dealers will not have a problem with this.
good luck!!
