I'm thinking about building a 1x9 mountain bike from Nashbar and don't know if it will work.

You can remove the smaller 22 tooth ring, but I do not think you can leave the 32 tooth ring off because hardware used to affix it to the crank spider is designed for 2 rings. You could put a bash guard on the outside and leave the front derailleur off. tf

Yes, you can remove the 2 inner chainrings if you want to. You will need some shorter chainring bolts however.

If you are going to do this, I would recommend removing the 2 outer chainrings and leaving the middle chainring. This will create better chain lines and make your cassette and chain last longer.
