It’s not surprising that youngster, trying to get better view of (reed or is it reef) from boat, should fall into water.

It should be 'reef' because the reef is under water and a person has to actually lean out of the boat to see it if the water is clear. Reed is a type of grass that can be seen while sitting comfortably in the boat

Probably Reef; as that is a portion of the sail that is rolled or tied down, or the act of rolling or tucking part of the sail is to reef, so............if he was looking........... splash! LOL.
